World Tuberculosis Day

Karachi, March 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):March 24th commemorates the fight against Tuberculosis (TB), considered to be one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. Striving to be free from the TB epidemic by 2035, Pakistan still has a long way to go before it achieves that goal.

Pakistan ranks 5th amongst the high burden countries in the world affected by TB. The prevalence, incidence, and mortality per 100,000 population per year from TB in Pakistan are 348, 276, and 34 respectively, therefore raising awareness and educating the public about TB becomes ever so crucial to protect ourselves and the larger community against it.

Tuberculosis and its symptoms

According to Dr Faisal Mahmood, Section Head Infectious Diseases at the Aga Khan University Hospital, “Tuberculosis is a type of bacteria which usually causes an infection in the lungs. However, this can also infect other parts of the body including the abdomen, brain, bones, etc.”

TB consists of two types, in latent TB the bacteria which causes the infection is inactive and does not cause symptoms. While Active TB causes symptoms, and can also be transmitted from one person to another.

“While the infection spreads through the tiny droplets that are released into the air when one sneezes or coughs. The bacteria can travel long distances after someone coughs, therefore TB of the lungs is considered to be the most contagious.”

Active tuberculosis is contagious and patients usually develop symptoms like coughing, chest pain, fever, and unintentional weight loss. The bacteria can travel long distances after someone coughs, so it’s important to limit social interactions if diagnosed with TB.

Prevention and Treatment

Prevention and treatment for TB depend on the spread of infection, and the areas it has affected. “TB in lungs is the most common form of the disease, causing a chronic cough. While the disease may also lead to unexplained weight loss and low-grade fever,” says Dr Faisal, adding that early detection of the disease is essential in treatment.

“Anyone with low-grade fever and cough or unexplained weight loss should see their physician, and if you are diagnosed with lung TB, make sure to stay in a well-ventilated room, only cough in a tissue paper and throw in a covered bin, make sure to take your medications and people taking care of you should not be known to have weak immunity.”

Having said that, TB is completely curable using medications prescribed by your doctor. The usual length of treatment is 6 months though in certain types of TB this may be prolonged. The medication is readily available at government-designated treatment centers, AKUH being one of them.

How to protect yourself?

The best possible protection against the disease is provided by the vaccine available for infants and children. However, in certain circumstances, medication can also be used to prevent the disease.

AKU feted as Zairi International Award winner

Karachi, March 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Aga Khan University has won the inaugural edition of the Award of Excellence for Disruptive Education, of the prestigious and competitive Zairi International Award in Higher Education 2022. AKU received the award based on the work of the University’s Network of Quality, Teaching and Learning, QTL_net, which supports excellence in academic programmes to ensure students have a strong learning experience during their academic years.

AKU was selected from amongst applications received from 31 countries with winners announced at a ceremony at the MENA Higher Education Leadership Forum in Dubai, UAE. The Award of Excellence for Disruptive Education considers innovative higher education institutions that stand out in their approach to shaping and re-imagining the future of higher education to meet the challenges of the future.

Announced by Dr. Peter J. Wells, Chief, Higher Education at UNESCO, the award was received by AKU’s Professor Tashmin Khamis, Vice Provost, Quality, Teaching and Learning and Ms. Azra Naseem, Director, Blended and Digital Learning.

Public-private partnership to boost immunisation in high-risk UCs of Karachi

Karachi, March 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):Efforts to integrate private providers for boosting routine childhood vaccination in Karachi’s low-income areas are set to receive a much-needed shot in the arm as a memorandum of understanding, signed by the Sindh Department of Health and the Aga Khan University goes into effect. The agreement entails integrating local private healthcare providers at the neighbourhood level to plug the gap in the government’s immunization infrastructure and develop sustainable community networks for increasing immunization coverage.

The project targets hot spots of immunisation refusals in eight union councils of Karachi to increase zero dose vaccination provided at birth as well as Penta-3 vaccination in under six-month children which is a marker of complete vaccination in under six-month children. Through the project, immunisation services and basic preventive care will be offered at 18 Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) centres set up within neighbourhood private provider clinics, NGO clinics and maternity homes.

Community members in the districts where the project is to be implemented report that private clinics located in the local neighbourhood are the mainstay for their daily illnesses but do not offer immunisation services, and while polio teams go from door to door to administer polio drops, the same facility is not available for other childhood vaccines for which families must visit government hospitals located at a considerable distance.

According to AKU’s senior lead for the project, Professor Shehla Zaidi, AKU with EPI Sindh and other government stakeholders will co-design novel action learning strategies for co-opting private providers for quality assured services including pay for performance, quality accreditation scores and positive behaviour recognition, supported digital communication and community networks. The project will build sustainable links with the Sindh Health Department’s Action Plan for Strengthening Public Private Partnerships 2021-26 and regulatory frameworks towards urban primary health centres,” she said.

Elaborating on the unique challenges of immunisation delivery in megacities, Dr Irshad Memon, head of the EPI in Sindh, asserted that immunisation rates in Karachi are far lower than in the province’s rural districts. “So far we have struggled to put in place a system to ensure that private providers report immunisation volumes, provide free services and deliver quality-assured services,” he said. “Hence this project fills a key need for technical assistance for effective private engagement for the urban poor. We need sustainable health systems – we don’t want to see super high-risk union councils in five years,” said Dr Memon. The project is being funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

A Two Day’s Training Program on EPPS held in Turbat University

Turbat, March 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Balochistan Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (BPPRA), in collaboration with the University of Turbat (UoT) organized a two day’s capacity-building training program on “Electronic Public Procurement System (EPPS)” on 21st and 22nd March 2022 at UoT. The closing session of the training program was jointly chaired by Prof. Dr. Jan Muhammad, Vice-Chancellor, UoT, and Mr. Mujeeb Ur Rehman, Managing Director, BPPRA. As many as fifty officers from different departments and institutes of Mekran Division, including officers from Turbat University participated in the training program.

Speaking on the occasion, the VC UoT Prof. Dr. Jan Muhammad thanked BPPRA for conducting capacity building training program on EPPS at UoT. He appreciated the efforts of the Balochistan Government for taking the lead in the country by becoming the first province to implement an international standard Electronic Bidding System.

Addressing during the closing session of the training program, Mujeeb Ur Rehman, MD, BPPRA said that this training program was aimed at capacity building of DDOs and other government officers of Mekran Division. He said that the government of Balochistan amended BPPRA Act in the first quarter of 2022 and incorporated EPPS for binding the Procuring Agencies to electronically receive bids for all procurements. It will improve the procurement governance in the province by establishing a transparent and cost-effective public procurement system ensuring transparency, accountability, and quality in all public procurements.
