Rising inflation serious threat to economy: Altaf Shakoor

Karachi, March 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):Unbridled inflation is a very serious threat to our fragile economy and it would shake the very socioeconomic foundations of the country if not controlled on war footing basis, said Pasban Democratic Party PDP Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Sunday. He said the most severe effect of inflation is on our foreign loans. With a free fall of Pakistani rupee these foreign loans and their neck breaking interest further rise, putting even more pressure on our budgetary allocations.

He said the lion’s share of our budget already goes to our foreign lenders like World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Asian Development Bank. He said huge CPEC loans are also a big national liability, and growing inflation is creating very serious problems in finding a monetary space for paying back these loans and their heavy interest. He said the situation is so worsened that we have to get new foreign loans to pay interest on our old foreign loans. He said we have mortgaged the whole country and even our central bank for these foreign loans. He said unless the inflation is controlled the negative spiral of these foreign loans would continue to torment the nation and country.

He said other grave threat of the rising inflation is payment of our mammoth oil import bill. He said with a weaker rupee the oil and gas we are importing are getting costlier with every passing day. He said Pakistan despite producing oil and gas is compelled to import LNG and oil. He wondered why the oil and gas production from Pakistan are not helping us in this situation. He said perhaps our agreements with foreign oil and gas companies are behind this phenomenon. He said without bringing down inflation and strengthen Pakistani rupee our costly fuel import would continue to be syphoning away our precious foreign exchange.

Altaf Shakoor regretted that Pakistan despite being an agricultural country is compelled to import food. He said we import sugar, wheat, pulses, cooking oil and tea. He said trillions of rupees are spent every year on import of food stuffs. He said the rising inflation is making this food import very costly and it would soon go to an unbearable level if the government failed to control the hike in inflation. He said Pakistan has already been facing a dreadful food inflation. He said this inflation would likely to become a national security threat but our ruling elite is the least concerned.

He said recently finance minister Shaukat Tarin, himself, has accepted that the balance of trade is the most serious issue of Pakistan. He said this problem also has its roots in inflation. He said the weak Pakistani rupee means more costlier imports and cheaper exports. He said the historic depreciation of Pakistan rupee during the ongoing tenure of PTI government did not boost exports as was expected but it only made imports further costlier, dealing a deadly blow to Pakistani economy. He said without taming inflation and appreciating the value of rupee this issue would continue to haunt Pakistan.

He said on local front rising inflation has robbed purchasing power of the common man. He said all commodities, especially kitchen items, have gone beyond the reach of poor masses. He said millions of more families have fallen beneath the poverty line. He said hunger and malnutrition of children are rising sharply in our country thanking to the floodgates of inflation. He said the prices of medicines have hiked by more than 200 percent during the tenure of present regime. He said stunt growth due to malnutrition is affecting whole country, especially the province of Sindh. He asked the rulers to have mercy on poor children and muzzle the dreadful inflation.

Altaf Shakoor demanded to give focus on agriculture and water; rapid uplift of megacity Karachi and development of two proposed industrial corridors: Karachi to Hyderabad and Karachi to Keti Bunder industrial corridors. He said the key to national development is the uplift of Karachi and they key to the uplift of Karachi is its rapid industrialization and modernizing its public transport system.

He said the way forward is that without checking inflation our economy would continue to bleed and the ultimate sufferer would be the poor masses of Pakistan, not its elite class who is already enjoying dual nationalities. He urged all the political parties of Pakistan to place the item of controlling inflation on the top of their agendas so that the nation and country could be given rid of this menace.

No one can stop the parliamentarians from voting: Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Islamabad, March 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addressing a press conference at Zardari House Islamabad, said that the challenge of the no-confidence that Imran Khan is facing is given by the Pakistani people. PPP’s 10-day long Awami march proved that the people no longer trust Imran Khan.

Chairman Bilawal said that it is a result of the PPP workers’ three-year long struggle that all the democratic forces of the country are using democratic means to challenge this undemocratic person. This is our right and a parliamentary tool. Just like it is the common man’s right to go to the voting booth and cast their vote, it is a parliamentarian’s right to vote in the no-confidence. Imran Khan is using abusive language since he is panicking and can clearly see his defeat.

A respectable man should have himself realized that he does not have the numbers. Imran is an undemocratic man and does not believe in democracy, law or justice. He believes in a fixed match and only knows how to rig the elections. The prime minister is not trying to win the no-confidence but wants to rig. We will not let this defeated man rig anything. The people of the country will not let him rig anything.

Chairman PPP said that Article 6 of our constitution is very clear and applies to every person who wishes to meddle with a constitutional process. When everyone can see that this man is trying to commit rigging, his representatives are announcing to not count votes and the police is forcefully barging into the parliament lodges to arrest honourable members, what message is being sent out?

Chairman Bilawal appealed to the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Chief Election Commissioner to protect the voting rights of every parliamentarian. He said that no one should be stopped from casting their vote, whether they belong to the opposition or the treasury benches. There is an ongoing conspiracy to deprive the members of the parliament of their right.

We will not tolerate this. We appeal to every single democratic individual who has sworn an oath to protect the constitution of Pakistan to ensure that the constitutional process is followed. This is the sole solution that can help the country emerge from this crisis. We cannot run this country on the rule of the jungle. There has to be a law of the land. We are peaceful and democratic people who did not throw a single pebble during a 10-day long protest all over the country. It is the right of the parliamentarians to cast their vote, and they will do so.

Chairman PPP said that the Pakistani nation knows that it is symbolic of the losing team to use abusive language and engage in ball-tampering. We will not let this defeated man rob the mandate of the people. This no-confidence is not only against Imran Khan but also against the economic crisis that has engulfed every Pakistani who is now facing inflation and unemployment.

This no-confidence is against the foreign policy that has isolated Pakistan in the world and created distances with our friends as well as worsened the situation with our enemies. This no-confidence is against the polarized anarchy we are headed towards as a society, caused by Imran Khan. We want to head towards free and fair elections after the no-confidence. We want to create an environment in which the representatives of the people sit together and transparent elections are held so that a government that has the mandate of the people is formed.

We cannot tolerate for Pakistan’s economic and foreign policies to be harmed because of a single man, or for the institutions to be made controversial. Imran Khan did not only intend to rig the no-confidence, but also the upcoming elections. This man’s foreign funding case is still pending in the Election Commission of Pakistan. We request the ECP to announce its decision regarding this case at its earliest. The nation should know which foreigners belonging to India and Israel funded this man.

Responding to questions, Chairman Bilawal said that the reason he is proud of this no-confidence as this is the first democratic one in the country’s history and is backed by the people of Pakistan. He said that the statements of the prime minister are a result of sheer panic and desperation, and should not be given attention. No prime minister in the history of Pakistan has ever been so desperate, who feels compelled to abuse everyone.

We would like to ask the PM who he termed as ‘animals’ in his speech. The prime minister’s desperate efforts will not be successful. The coming time is very difficult and the result of Imran Khan’s tsunami will be before us. This calls for an environment where people work together to help this country emerge from the crises caused by Imran Khan. We will be successful in creating such an atmosphere.

He said that no delay was taken in his efforts to approach those who could aid in the removal of this undemocratic man. If we want electoral reforms, we would have to work with everyone. This is how politics is done, listening to others, putting forth our perspective and then reaching a compromise. This country is not of a single person. Talking to representatives of political parties for the betterment of the people is something we will continue to do.

Would Imran Khan be so baffled had our numbers not been complete, Chairman PPP asked. I challenge Imran Khan to hold a session and let his members vote. Our no-confidence will be successful. Our meetings with the former allies of the government have exceeded expectations. Chairman Bilawal said that we believe in democracy and are confident as well as happy to see that our opponent is so worried. We are preparing for a win. Imran would not have been in such trouble had he learnt from the Charter of Democracy.

We have come to know that schools are being closed wherever Imran Khan is holding speeches and the students are being made to attend. Audio of applause is being played via soundtracks. Chairman PPP said that it is his advice to Imran Khan that he should resign. Imran’s threats will go against him. Chairman Bilawal said that we have had issues with the MQM but both political parties are of the view that we have a better chance of improving people’s lives if we work together. We do not need to agree on every issue but there is scope for common ground to be reached.

Australia ease to victory against New Zealand

Dubai, March 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):Australia recovered from a shaky start and put New Zealand to the sword in a 141–run victory to remain undefeated at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022.

A 101-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Ellyse Perry and Tahlia McGrath stabilised Australia’s innings before some big hitting from Ashleigh Gardner lifted them to 269 for eight.

New Zealand went from 22 for no loss to 35 for five in no time in reply and never recovered as they were bowled out for 128 at the Basin Reserve.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field but did not take their first wicket until the final ball of the powerplay, as Alyssa Healy’s attempted pull shot found Amelia Kerr at midwicket.

Fielder Katey Martin then got into action in her 100th ODI, taking the catch to dismiss Meg Lanning, before opener Rachael Haynes fell four balls later to Lea Tahuhu to leave Australia in a spot of bother at 56 for three.

Beth Mooney joined Perry at the crease and the pair targeted seamer Hayley Jensen for runs, steering their side to 97 for three at the half-way mark – but boundaries were often few and far between.

Just as it looked like the partnership was starting to develop, Mooney chopped on off the bowling of Jess Kerr for 30 from 44 balls.

McGrath joined Perry and the two rotated the strike masterfully, bringing up their 50-run partnership with the final ball of the 40th over.

And then Australia really kicked into gear, putting on more than 100 runs in the final 10 overs for a second time at this World Cup with Jensen again the initial target, being taken all around the ground for 20 off one over.

Maddy Green provided the something special needed to end the partnership, as she ran round to her left and made a leaping catch to dismiss Perry for an 86-ball 68 off the bowling off Tahuhu.

Unfortunately for New Zealand, that was the beginning of Australia’s assault, as Gardner, only recently out of Covid isolation, got off the mark with a four.

McGrath fell for 57 but Gardner just kept going and finished the innings with a six to reach 48 from only 18 balls to set New Zealand 270 to win.

In blustery Wellington, New Zealand had the wind firmly knocked out of their sails as teenage sensation Darcie Brown combined with Perry to rip through the top order.

Devine was out for run-a-ball six and Amelia Kerr only scored one in her 50th ODI, as Mooney took a stunning catch at slip.

New Zealand were frustrated and Suzie Bates showed it by sending up a high but comfortable catch to McGrath at midwicket.

The home side had slipped to 24 for three and things went from bad to worse, as Green went for three by sending an edge to Healy behind the stumps. Frances Mackay made just one as she was given out LBW off the bowling of Brown to leave the hosts on 35 for five before the experience of Amy Satterthwaite and Martin temporarily settled nerves.

But Amanda-Jade Wellington took two wickets in two balls, first trapping Martin LBW and then tempting Jensen into a stroke that was caught at cover.

Wellington had to wait another over for her hat-trick ball, which Satterthwaite safely defended, but wickets continued to fall and Hannah Rowe went back to the pavilion for just six.

Out came Tahuhu to join her wife Satterthwaite and the pair put on a 35-run partnership before Lanning took a fine catch to dismiss Satterthwaite for 44.

Tahuhu was the final wicket to fall two overs later as Australia earned a mammoth win to take a big step towards the semi-finals.
