Research and Innovation Showcase of Excellence

Islamabad, March 16, 2022 (PPI-OT): Research and Innovation Showcase of Excellence (RISE) – an event geared towards exhibiting market-ready innovation, research capabilities and technologies of NUST, and forging deeper and meaningful industry partnerships – was held the other day at Lahore Garrison Golf and Country Club. Mr Mian Muhammad Mansha, a renowned business magnate, graced the occasion as chief guest. Prominent amongst others present were Lt Gen (Retd) Javed Mahmood Bukhari, Rector NUST, and over 250 C-level executives from Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Gujrat.

 

The assortment of high-impact projects showcased at the event catered to many diverse fields such as Health, Defence, AI, IT, Real Estate, Auto Tech and also NUST’s entrepreneurial ventures emerging from its incubation spaces as well as the country’s first Science and Technology Park, the National Science and Technology Park based in NUST Islamabad campus. Industry and corporate leaders appreciated NUST for organising the showcase in Lahore and acknowledged the quality of research on display.

 

Addressing the occasion, Mr Mansha commended the efforts of NUST towards developing close liaison with the industry and eventually paving the way for sustainable socio-economic growth of the country. He stressed the need for taking such initiatives to bridge the gap between industry and academia, and in so doing, develop indigenous solutions to current and impending problems.

 

Rector NUST expressed deep gratitude to all industry partners in supporting academic-based research and innovation and outlined various avenues for collaboration with NUST. Towards the end, a Memorandum of Agreement was also signed between NUST and the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). President LCCI Mr Nauman Kabir expressed his resolve to work with the university on multiple projects.

In-House Meeting with delegation from Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Pakistan

Islamabad, March 16, 2022 (PPI-OT): The Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) had an In-House Meeting with a delegation from Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Pakistan. The delegation was headed by Dr Niels Hegewisch, Country Director FES Pakistan. Humayun Khan, Programme Coordinator FES Pakistan and Shoukat Ali, Logistic Manager FES also accompanied Dr Hegewisch.

 

Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director General ISSI and Ms Amina Khan, Director CAMEA briefed the FES delegation about the working of the Institute and the scope of its activities was discussed. There was mutual agreement on the need to further cooperate and coordinate by organizing joint events.

CSP Annual Advisory Board Meeting

Islamabad, March 16, 2022 (PPI-OT): The Centre for Strategic Perspectives (CSP) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) held its annual Advisory Board meeting on March 15, 2022. Members of the board joined the meeting both physically and virtually. Those present on the occasion included: Ambassador Gheorghe Savuica; Dr. Khuram Iqbal; Dr. Salman Shah; Dr. Yulia Nikitina; Ambassador Akbar S. Ahmed; Ambassador Shafqat Kakakhel; Mr. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh; Lt. General Sikander Afzal (Retd); Mr. Husnain Mirza.

 

In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director General, ISSI, apprised the board of the workings of the five centres of excellence at the ISSI that have contributed towards the aim of producing quality work, achieving synergy, focusing on the relevance of issue areas and narrative building. Ambassador Chaudhry said that the theme that ISSI is following for the year 2022 is “National Security – Expanding Horizons.

 

While giving the Performance Review of CSP, Dr. Neelum Nigar, Director CSP, briefed the board about the vision and functions of the Centre. She said that for year 2022, CSP is working on Pakistan’s economic and human security, and how it can leverage its Geo-economics keeping in mind the newly formulated National Security Policy. This was followed by an interactive session, in which the members appreciated the work of CSP and gave valuable suggestions in order to improve the Centre’s research activities and outreach.

First Executive Body Elections of IIUI Students’ Societies held at Female Campus

Islamabad, March 16, 2022 (PPI-OT): First Executive body elections of IIUI students’ societies, 2022 were held at female campus under the supervision of Directorate of Students Affairs. The nominees contested for the positions of President, Vice-President, Information and Media Secretary, and Finance Secretary. All candidates campaigned their way through the university by giving in-class speeches, gaining the votes and trust of the students. The elections were advertised by displaying banners and posters at Female Campus and by disseminating information through the CRs WhatsApp group of IIUI, Female Campus.

 

After Nominations of positions (President, Vice President, Information and Media Secretary, and Finance secretary) against each society by focal persons, Students were given time of three days to start the campaign at the female campus to motivate students to vote for them. They prepared posters and banners to motivate the student body. The Candidates made speeches to give a better insight to the audience about who they should be voting for.

 

It featured perfect elections of candidates for the President, Vice-President, Information and Media Secretary, and Finance secretary, campaign days, voting day, and results announcement. It presented a unique opportunity for the students to experience the elections process and elect their candidates by voting.

 

Excitement was in the air as the candidates and students as the day of the polling votes arrived. Dr. Sumayya Chughtai, Students ‘Advisor, Female Campus encouraged the candidates by making a speech, urging the candidates to choose the right candidate for the upcoming elections. The Candidates were thrilled after hearing the results and cheered for the elected winners. The Oath taking ceremony will be held soon to make students liable for fair conduct of their duties and set a good example for the others.

Waqas Khan wins prestigious title of Mr. GCU 2021-22

Lahore, March 16, 2022 (PPI-OT): Waqas Khan, a student of BSc (Hons) Physical Education, won the prestigious title of Mr GCU 2021-22 at the bodybuilding championship organized by Government College University Lahore Sports Board. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi graced the occasion as chief guest and announced a cash award for Waqas Khan, while Director Sports Muhammad Waseem and Controller Examinations Shahzad Ahmed were also present on the occasion.

 

Waqas flexed his rippling muscles to win the title in the finals of the competition adjudicated by Mr. Asia Gold Medallist Baber Tufail, Mr. South Asia winner Jan Muhammad and former Mr. Pakistan Hafiz Anees. Waqas first bagged the top position in the category of musclemen with over 65kg of weight. Then, he took part in the finals and won the title of Mr GCU Lahore 2021-22.

 

The performance of Rafay Khalid, a student of FSc, was significant since he pushed his more experienced compatriot, Muhammad Abid from Physical Education Department, into second place in the closely contested competition in the 80Kg category. Hamza Butt, a student of BFA (Hons) Graphic Designing, managed to beat tough competitors in the 75kg category. Shahzaib, a student of FA, bagged top position in the 70kg category.

 

Awais and Ghulam Muhammad secured the gold medals in 55Kg and 60kg categories. Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi appreciated the hard work by the participants and praised their efforts they put in the game of bodybuilding. He said that devotion and dedication and honesty are the basis of success. He announced that GCU is going to establish a special hostel for 100 students.

 

He promised to extend every support, moral and financial, to the students of GCU and assured his endless concern for the promotion of sports in GCU. He announced cash awards for the record breakers of the competitions at GCU.

GCU VC, students donate blood for Thalassemia patients

Lahore, March 16, 2022 (PPI-OT): The students and faculty members of the Government College University, Lahore on Tuesday donated almost 160 pints of blood for the children suffering from Thalassemia. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi inaugurated the blood donation camp by donating a pint of blood.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi said that the two-day camp was organized by the university’s Blood Donor Society (GCU BDS) in collaboration with the Fatmid Foundation. He also requested other faculty members and students to donate blood for the children suffering from Thalassemia.

 

The Vice Chancellor appreciated the efforts of GCU the GCU-BDS members who donate more than 1,600 pints of blood every year for the patients suffering from cancer and other diseases at different hospitals. GCU BDS Advisor Dr. Babar Naseem Aasi said that the Vice Chancellor is a regular donor of Blood Donation Society and his donations inspired other students and faculty members to donate blood for saving lives of children suffering from different diseases.
