Karachi, March 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that his Party had been struggling for gender equality and had taken practical steps to ensure that women are provided equal opportunities in every field. In his message on the eve of International Women’s Day being observed across the world under the aegis of the United Nations, the PPP Chairman endorsed its 2022 theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.
He pointed out that Pakistan elected a woman Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as Prime Minister for the first time in the entire Muslim world. PPP had proudly inducted women judges in the superior courts, elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly of Pakistan. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto established First Women Bank, separate police stations for women, a network of lady health workers, and allotted land to landless women. PPP was also responsible for introducing pro women legislation including that for harassment of women in the workplace, he said.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that PPP was proud to have the most vibrant Women Wing having organisational network down to the Union Council level. This speaks the level of commitment of the Party towards promotion and empowerment of women. PPP government in Sindh has started a unique programme for economic empowerment of women, which has benefitted nearly a million.
He further pointed out that Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was launched by President Asif Ali Zardari in 2008 as an unconditional cash transfer targeted at the millions of poorest women. BISP is an internationally acclaimed programme. Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari pledged that PPP would continue to strive for emancipation and empowerment of women by carving out more opportunities for them in every sector to achieve the dream of Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
