Jhal Magsi: In the recent General Election of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-254, encompassing Jhal Magsi, Kachhi, and Nasirabad, achieved victory by securing 79,304 votes, accounting for 52% of the 152,683 ballots cast in the constituency. This represents only 24% of the 324,739 registered voters in the area. The election was conducted under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system, which awards the seat to the candidate with the highest number of votes, not necessarily a majority.
According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) reveals that voter turnout in NA-254 was 47%. This constituency was among the 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winner managed to secure 50% or more of the votes polled. However, a significant portion of voters, 65,628 or 43%, chose not to support the winning candidate. The winner’s share of the total registered voter base remained at 24%.
The runner-up candidate garnered 29% of the ballots cast, while the third-placed candidate received 3%. The remaining candidates collectively obtained 11% of the votes cast. Additionally, 7,751 ballots, representing 5%, were declared invalid.
This report is part of FAFEN's analysis of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system often results in elected members who do not have majority support, contrasting with a proportional representation system that would ensure a more comprehensive reflection of voter preferences. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 highlights the disparity between the proportion of votes cast and the representation achieved in the National Assembly constituencies.
