MNA Secures Victory with 16% Voter Support in NA-252

Musa Khail: In the recent General Elections 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-252, Musa Khail-cum-Barkhan-cum-Loralai-cum-Dukki, secured victory with only 16% of the total registered voter support. Despite receiving 55,003 votes, which accounted for 28% of the 195,018 ballots cast, the MNA's win highlights the workings of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where a candidate needs only the highest vote share to win, not a majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network's (FAFEN) analysis, the voter turnout in the constituency was recorded at 57%. The election results revealed that 71% of the voters, amounting to 138,331 individuals, chose other candidates, underscoring the MNA's lack of majority support. The runner-up candidate captured 27% of the ballots, while the third-placed candidate secured 12%. The remaining votes, which totaled 32%, were distributed among other candidates, with 1% declared invalid.

This report is part of FAFEN's broader analysis of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The findings illustrate a discrepancy inherent in the FPTP system, where elected members often lack majority backing. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate seats based on the proportion of votes received, better reflecting the electorate's preferences. Data from Pakistan's GE-2024 elections underscore this representational gap across all constituencies. FAFEN's comprehensive constituency analysis can be accessed through their official platform.
