Karachi: The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) has successfully completed corneal transplants from a deceased donor, marking a significant achievement in organ donation initiatives. The procedure has given the gift of sight to two individuals, thanks to the donation by the family of Sher Ali Taheem, a 17-year-old student from Karachi, who was declared brain dead following a severe brain hemorrhage.
Sher Ali had a longstanding connection with SIUT, having received a kidney transplant at the age of eight. Despite the successful function of the donated kidney for nearly a decade, he had recently become dialysis-dependent and was awaiting a second transplant.
In the face of their loss, Sher Ali's family consented to the donation of his corneas, demonstrating their commitment to organ donation. The transplants were performed on January 7, bringing vision to a 45-year-old man and a 21-year-old student.
Prof. Adib Rizvi, the founding director of SIUT, along with the transplant team, recognized the family's extraordinary act of donating their son's corneas. They emphasized the importance of deceased organ donation and encouraged society to consider similar actions to transform and save lives.
