Rawalkot, After an intense confrontation that included boycotting the Supreme Court and High Court and striking against local police actions, lawyers in Rawalkot, Abbaspur, and Hajira have ceased their strike and resumed participation in court proceedings in Kashmir. The strike concluded without the fulfillment of their major demands, which included the suspension of 41 police officers and a compensation claim against SP Poonch Khawar Shaukat.
According to University of Poonch Rawalakot, the lawyers initially boycotted the Supreme Court and High Court, causing the cancellation of planned court tours to Rawalkot. The situation escalated when they attacked police officers in a local judge’s court, leading to the police filing an FIR against six lawyers including the president of the bar. This incident prompted the lawyers to strike. An intermediate solution was eventually brokered by the Deputy Commissioner of Poonch, which included the withdrawal of the FIR by police, and repairs to a vehicle by the commissioner instead of suspending the officers. During this period, SP Poonch Khawar Shaukat was promoted to grade 18 and DSP Parvez Hameed also received a promotion and a transfer.
The resolution also established judicial boundaries, stipulating that police cannot arrest any accused appearing in court for interim bail, marking a significant outcome of the lawyers’ protest.
