NA-217 Election Analysis Reveals MNA’s Limited Voter Support

Tando Allahyar: In the recent General Elections 2024 for the National Assembly seat of NA-217 in Tando Allahyar, the elected Member of the National Assembly secured 119,530 votes, which translates to 55 percent of the 215,748 ballots cast. However, this figure represents just 26 percent of the total 451,632 registered voters in the constituency. This discrepancy highlights the nature of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where victory is determined by the highest vote share rather than an absolute majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency indicates a voter turnout of 48 percent. Despite NA-217 being one of the 70 constituencies where the winner managed to secure 50 percent or more of the polled votes, a significant number of voters, totaling 88,993 or 41 percent, did not support the winning candidate. Additionally, the winner's share among the total registered voters remained at 26 percent.

The election results also showed that the runner-up candidate garnered 34 percent of the ballots cast, while the third-place candidate received 3 percent. The remaining candidates collectively accounted for 4 percent of the votes, with 7,225 votes, or 3 percent, declared invalid.

The analysis of NA-217 is part of FAFEN's broader study on electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system often results in elected representatives who lack majority support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats in accordance with the vote shares won by parties or candidates, providing a more accurate reflection of voter preferences. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 highlight the gap between votes cast and the representation secured across all National Assembly constituencies.
