Kampala: Kwesiga Pafrah, a renal nurse at Aga Khan University Hospital's Nakawa Specialty Centre in Uganda, is redefining the boundaries of patient care by offering unwavering support to those suffering from chronic kidney disease. His commitment to his patients transcends conventional duties, as he remains accessible to them during emergencies, providing a sense of security and comfort.

According to The Aga Khan University, Kwesiga's journey into the field of renal nursing began when he unexpectedly applied for a position after seeing a job advertisement. Over the past nine years, he has dedicated himself to caring for patients who require regular dialysis due to conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Despite the exhausting routine and emotional toll on patients, Kwesiga and his colleagues strive to create a supportive and familiar environment for them.

Kwesiga emphasizes the importance of building genuine relationships with his patients, often engaging in light-hearted banter about football rivalries, which adds a personal touch to their care. However, this deep connection comes with its challenges, as Kwesiga admits that losing a patient can feel like losing a part of his own life.

Outside of his nursing duties, Kwesiga finds solace in farming, with a particular interest in coffee plantations. He hopes to continue this passion after retirement, while also wishing that future generations, including his potential children, find work that provides them with a sense of purpose and fulfilment. For Kwesiga, nursing is about being fully present for others during their most challenging times, a choice he continues to make every day.
