Karachi: Under the captaincy of Fatima Sana, the Pakistan women’s cricket team is set to adopt a more aggressive approach in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, aiming to overcome past challenges and push for higher scores and better finishes.
According to International Cricket Council, the team has historically struggled with scoring in the powerplay and chasing totals over 120, leading to low overall scores and difficulties in key matches. However, a shift in strategy towards more assertive play has been prompted by evolving game dynamics and the promising talent of young players.
Captain Fatima Sana highlighted the transformative mindset the team has adopted, emphasizing the importance of positive intent especially in the early overs to set competitive totals. She noted that key players, including Gull Feroza and Muneeba Ali, have shown good form in recent matches, adding depth to the team’s batting lineup.
The team’s bowling lineup is equally strong, with Sadia Iqbal, who ranks third in the ICC T20 rankings, and Nashra Sandhu in the top ten. The spin department, crucial for the conditions in Dubai, will be anchored by Nida Dar, Syeda Arooba Shah, and Tuba Hassan.
In preparation for the World Cup, the team participated in a fitness camp followed by a series against South Africa, where they achieved their highest-ever T20I total of 181 runs. Despite a recent loss in the Asia Cup, the team is motivated to perform well in their opening match against Sri Lanka and throughout the tournament.
Pakistan aims to surpass their historical record of one win per tournament by leveraging their encounters with top-tier teams like Australia, India, and New Zealand to boost confidence and performance.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is a significant opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its new strategy and the capabilities of its players on the international stage, backed by strong national support.
