The Aga Khan University receives occupational health and safety certification 

Karachi, August 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Aga Khan University has received the ISO 45001:2018 certification for its efforts to address potential work-related occupational health and safety risks, and its strong commitment to adhere to best practices to provide a safe working environment on its campuses.

Awarded to the University’s Project and Construction Management Division for construction activities on capital projects on its Stadium Road campus in Karachi, the certification journey involved an in-depth assessment and review of the University’s processes and alignment towards ISO 45001:2018 standard requirements by SGS United Kingdom Ltd, a testing, inspection, verification and certification company.

“Awarded following a rigorous audit, ISO 45001:2018 is a testament to AKU’s relentless focus on occupational health and safety management system,” said Rizwan Karim, Director of the Project and Construction Management Division. “We aim to ensure that occupational health and safety measures are implemented across campuses in the future.”

ISO 45001:2018 is a globally recognized occupational health and safety standard developed by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) that guides organisations on minimising the probability of accidents, illness, injury, or fatality caused by workplace hazards.

Signing of MoU between IUB and Multan Flying Club 

Bahawalpur, August 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Islamia University of Bahawalpur and Multan Flying Club for mutual cooperation in the field of aviation. The memorandum was signed by Vice Chancellor, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob and Operations Manager Multan Flying Club, Multan International Airport Multan Captain Retired Syed Amin Pasha. Dean Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amjad, Dr. Abid Shehzad, Director International Linkages and faculty members were present on this occasion.

The purpose of the agreement is to get practical support from the aviation industry for the BS Aviation Sciences program at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur so that the faculty and students can be aware of the latest developments in the field of aviation. The curriculum of BS Aviation Sciences will be designed according to the requirements of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and classrooms and practical training facilities will be provided to the students.

Similarly, issues related to admissions and teaching activities will also be decided through mutual cooperation. Multan Flying Club will provide technical support and laboratory facilities in this regard. Facilities of Multan Flying Club will be provided for training purposes. Similarly, three years of on-the-job training will be provided to university students. In this regard, implementation of aviation standards and quality control will be ensured.

Two Days Hands-On Workshop on REVIT Structure Fundamentals held at Capital University 

Islamabad, August 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), under BIM Center of Excellence, CUST hosted a Two-Days Hands-On Workshop on “REVIT Structure Fundamentals” on 16th-17th August, 2022. The workshop was held to enlighten participants with the practical knowledge and applications of REVIT Structure in Construction Industry, and also to help them in preparation for International Autodesk Certification.

Autodesk REVIT is a 4D Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for architects, engineers, designers and contractors with tools to plan and track various stages in the building’s lifecycle, from concept to construction and later maintenance and/or demolition. The software allows users to design a building and structure and its components in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements, and access building information from the building model’s database.

The participants of the workshop were provided hands on experience of REVIT Structure Fundamentals. The workshop participants included undergraduate/postgraduate students, and professionals from Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Sukkur, NESCOM and various construction firms. The resource person for the particular workshop was Mr. Shafaqat Iftikhar from Designmen Consulting Engineers, Islamabad. The participants were provided certificates, by HoD Civil Engineering, Prof. Ishtiaq Hassan at the end of the workshop.

Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization held workshop on “Measure of Software Similarity” 

Islamabad, August 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):MOSS (Measure of Software Similarity) is an automatic system for determining the similarity of programs. The main application of MOSS is detection of plagiarism in programming classes. The algorithm behind MOSS is a significant improvement over other cheating detection algorithm. In response to a query, the Moss server produces HTML pages listing pairs of programs with similar code. MOSS also highlights individual passages in programs that appear the same, making it easy to quickly compare the files.

Keeping in view the significance of MOSS in context of faculty development, Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) organized “Two Hours Hands-On Session on MOSS” on Monday, 15th August, 2022 at 11:00 AM in Instructions Lab-III, M-Block. The workshop was held specifically for the faculty members of Computer Science (CS), Software Engineering (SE) and Electrical Engineering (EE) Departments.

The faculty members from various departments attended the session. The event lasted till 01:00 PM including the Q/A session. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Omaid Ghayyur, CS Department, CUST. The session ended on a high note and proved to be a great source of practical knowledge for the participants.

TransKarachi and LUMS to Collaborate on Addressing Urban Mobility Issues

Lahore, August 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):CEO, Mr. Wasif Ijlal and Gender Specialist, Barrister Maham Durrani, from TransKarachi (Red Line Bus Rapid Transit), visited LUMS on August 22, for an MoU signing ceremony. The collaboration between TransKarachi and LUMS is in the space of Gender and Urban Mobility through the lens of technology.

This association has been formed for joint technological interventions, research, trainings, and seminars. The topics of focus will be around urban mobility issues including gender mainstreaming in public transport. This collaboration will also allow the execution of joint surveys, focused group discussions, interviews, and awareness campaigns.

Associate Professor, Dr. Momin Uppal, the Principal Investigator for the Grand Challenge Fund (UrbanTech Pakistan) project, shared the progress of the overall project and possible avenues where LUMS can support TransKarachi, keeping in view mutual goals. This project is backed by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, and its broader goal is to create technological foundations of data-driven policymaking for sustainable urban development.

Director, LUMS Learning Institute, Dr. Suleman Shahid, one of the co-Principal Investigators of the project, lead the discussion on the female mobility research thread, ‘Urraan: Women in Urban Mobility’. Ms. Sana Riaz, Urban Policy Consultant at LUMS, presented the progress of Urraan. The key objective of the project is to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges women experience while utilising public transport in Pakistan. It also aims to adopt a more holistic approach to what might constitute an ideal public transport experience for women. This may be possible via concrete interventions that can easily be replicated across the region, and through broad awareness campaigns that highlight lesser-known issues regarding women’s travel experiences.

Mr. Ijlal shared the mandates and plans of TransKarachi and the operations of the Karachi Breeze System. Socio-economic uplifting is a strong focus of TransKarachi including environmental sustainability and gender mainstreaming. Barrister Maham Durrani presented the gender sensitisation activities being carried out, and in the pipeline, for the new bus rapid transit red line, from workplace anti-harassment trainings to mobile panic button response protocols.

Also in attendance were Project Co-PIs Drs. Syed M Hasan, Muhammad Tahir and Zubair Khalid.
