LUMS and UoBS Students Celebrate Experiential Learning Programme in Skardu

Lahore, August 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):Last week students, faculty, and staff from LUMS and the University of Baltistan, Skardu (UoBS) celebrated the successful completion of the inaugural session of ‘Learning Without Borders: The Baltistan Experience’. 150 students from LUMS, and 150 students from UoBS, came together for a month in Skardu, where they participated in one of five experiential learning programmes. The closing ceremony on the Anchan campus in Skardu provided an opportunity to share learnings and to commemorate the successful conclusion of this ground-breaking programme.

Dr. Ishtiaq Hussain, Assistant Professor and focal person, UoBS, highlighted the opportunities that the programme provided. “There is a lot of knowledge and wisdom hidden behind these mountains. As students and faculty, you observed the environment around you, picking up rocks, flowers, going in the water, seeing energy resources – observing them all and embracing this opportunity for learning,” he said.

Representing the LUMS faculty, Dr. Muhammad Tariq, Associate Professor, congratulated students and said, “I can say with full conviction that this dream that we have woven together is the seed you have sown for a new era, new research and new teaching. InshaAllah we will harvest its fruit together in the coming years.”

Dr. Naeem Khan, Vice Chancellor, UoBS, referred to the landmark academic collaboration between both universities. “This partnership will continue and become a model on how to learn together, how to help each other, how to study the environment and learn from our ecology and culture.”

Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, LUMS, encouraged the graduating cohort to look beyond disciplinary boundaries: “Remember that everything that you have learned is connected. Real education unlocks what we didn’t understand before.” He also echoed sincere appreciation to everyone involved and looked forward to further strengthen the programme next year.

Speaking about the future, he continued: “We are going to build a foundation for many more iterations of the programme that will go beyond universities to serve communities at large.”

Hum Sab Ka Pakistan Campaign Celebrates Independence Day

Lahore, August 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Office of Human Resources (HR) organised a campaign, ‘Hum Sab Ka Pakistan’, celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day which involved a photo contest using the gift package of balloons and badges sent to them.

The entire LUMS community participated with great enthusiasm and shared team pictures demonstrating their patriotic spirit. It was incredibly difficult for the HR team to choose the winners from a wide range of contributions but after much deliberation, two different categories of winners were announced – Winners (those who won the contest) and Creative Stories – those who won our hearts.

The top three winners, along with the ‘Early Bird’ prize winner included:

The Department of Finance and Internal Audit: For the incredible vantage point.

National Incubation Centre Lahore: For going the many extra miles (quite literally!).

Department of Physics: For breaking the ‘Engineering’ stereotype.

Suleman Dawood School of Business: For being the first entry in the contest.

The HR team was inspired by the creativity and bespoke messages embodied through the pictures and created a separate category of winners called ‘A picture worth a thousand words’.

The top four departments that encouraged this decision included:

LUMS Learning Institute: Celebrating who we are by highlighting the ethnic diversity of Pakistan.

Centre for Business and Society: For demonstrating that screaming out loud is not always enough and a wake-up call takes more than that.

The Department of Life Sciences: For paying a tribute to all the Pakistani women in science because “not all heroes wear capes, some wear lab coats!’

Office of Academic Advising and Student Success: For going truly ‘beyond borders’ as remote team members share the spirit.

The top three winners were presented with their framed winning picture along with a cake arranged by LUMS Pepsi Dining Centre, while all the other winners also received their framed pictures.

The HR team wholeheartedly congratulates all the participating departments for displaying such camaraderie and sharing their wonderful stories!
