ICC and NIUM announce Global Hackathon winning idea set to improve the digital cricket fan experience

Dubai, March 16, 2023 (PPI-OT):The ICC and Nium, the global platform for on-demand money movement, today announced the winning idea for the first ever “Next in” global hackathon from over 9550 teams, with the aim of changing the way fans experience cricket and to engage a younger audience.

In an exclusive event held in Bengaluru, the winning idea was presented by team ‘Fanisko’. Their solution offers an enhanced live cricket viewing experience through 3D Augmented Reality, allowing users to play the game in real time from the comfort of their homes. The team’s solution is based on Web AR technology, can integrate within the ICC app and offers in-depth player insights, bringing cricket spectators closer to the action.

The event saw five passionate teams shortlisted, and invited to present their concepts and creations to a panel of prestigious judges including Hackathon Ambassador, Dinesh Karthik. The other teams in the Finale explored various other aspects of digital fan engagement from a rewards based crypto solution to immersive metaverse experiences and a location based social media application catered around cricket events.

The “Next In” Hackathon, kicked off in January and saw 12,500 individuals form over 9550 teams from 113 countries, including over 1000 registrants from the USA, a strategic priority market for both the ICC and Nium. Ideas were submitted across four key areas; Web3 and Metaverse, Fintech, In-stadia experience and Augmented or Virtual Reality (AR/VR). From the concepts submitted 32% focused on improving the experience of a fan going to watch a match in the stadium, while 28% centred on the use of AR/VR technologies to create a fan engagement activity or game.

Throughout the idea-submission process each key area had a dedicated set of mentors, who are experts in their respective fields, guiding the teams to meet the below criteria:

Technically feasibility

Financial feasibility

Potential Business impact

Implementation and scalability

The registered teams were from a variety of different backgrounds including schools, colleges, corporate business and start-ups, with an average age of 26.

ICC Head of Digital, Finn Bradshaw said: The “Next In” Hackathon has been an incredible exercise in unearthing some of the most innovative solutions from the global tech community. As we went through this journey for the first time with NIUM, what was really exciting was seeing fans from over a 100 countries engage with our sport. Today we are proud to have crowned Fanisko as winners and believe their prototype has the potential to become a favourite product for cricket fans.”

Team Lead for Fanisko, Venugopal Rajagopalan said: “We at team Fanisko are thrilled to have won this exciting Hackathon organised by the ICC in partnership with NIUM and Hack2skill. It took a ton of planning and lots of iterations to get it absolutely right as we faced a few unique challenges of being in different countries and time-zones. What helped was the common vision and understanding that we had about the process and the desired output. We would like to thank the ICC, NIUM and Hack2skill for providing this opportunity to us to display our capabilities. We really look forward to working with them and executing this idea in the coming few months.”

“All of the entries in the Next In Hackathon showed how technical innovation are flourishing in the global cricket community,” said Jeremiah Glodoveza, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing at Nium. “On behalf of the 1000 cricket fans at Nium working on the most-challenging problems in finance, thank you to all our participants and congratulations to the winners. The future of fan engagement is bright and I cannot wait to see some of these ideas become part of the game.”

Hackathon Ambassador Dinesh Karthik said: “Cricket has always embraced innovation, no matter what your role – broadcaster, player or fan. As broadcasters we rely heavily on technology to enhance the viewing experience and as players we’ve seen first-hand the benefits of performance and data analysis. But, today, as a fan, I am very much looking forward to what these ideas mean for the future of cricket experiences”.

ICC World Test Championship – India confirmed as Finalists following fifth-day WTC drama

Dubai, March 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): On a day of high Test drama, India sealed their place at the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023 by virtue of Sri Lanka’s dramatic last-over defeat against New Zealand and a drawn final Test in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, confirming a mouth-watering Australia-India matchup for the Ultimate Test at the Oval from 7 to 11 June, plus a reserve day. Before the day’s play, Sri Lanka needed to bowl out New Zealand and hope that India failed to win in Ahmedabad to remain contenders for a spot in June’s showdown, however a thrilling climax in Christchurch saw an inspired Kane Williamson guide the hosts to chase down 285 for victory with two wickets to spare amid dramatic scenes.

In Ahmedabad, Australia’s batting resistance frustrated the hosts on the final day, with the match ending in a draw following five days of intense battle where batters on both sides scored big in an attempt to seize the upper hand. The draw meant the Rohit Sharma-led India won the Border-Gavaskar series 2-1, and sees them conclude their World Test Championship campaign on 58.80%, ensuring their passage through to a second successive appearance in the Ultimate Test. Sri Lanka’s loss leaves them unable to qualify for the Final with a current tally of 48.48%. Even a victory in the second Test against New Zealand at Wellington will not be enough to see them break into the top two of the ICC World Test Championship standings.

Australia had confirmed their qualification ten days ago thanks to their nine-wicket win in the Indore Test, and the draw helps them end the two-year Test competition in top spot. The Wellington Test is the last fixture in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle with the Ultimate Test set to be the crowning glory for Australia or India. India will be aiming to go one-better than the result two years ago at The Hampshire Bowl, Southampton where New Zealand won the inaugural edition thanks to a scintillating eight-wicket victory. The Ultimate Test also provides India another chance of grabbing an elusive ICC trophy (across formats) for the first time in 10 years, the Asian cricketing powerhouse last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma said: “We are delighted to qualify for our second successive World Test Championship Final. We have played some outstanding cricket both home and away in the last two years and I am proud of my team and their unwavering commitment to success in Test cricket which is one of the main reasons for our qualification. “We will soon turn our focus on the Ultimate Test at The Oval which is one of the most iconic Test venues in the world. Australia will definitely come hard at us in the final and it should make for an enthralling contest that will be enjoyed by five-day cricket fans from around the world.

“India have always enjoyed excellent support in England and I am confident that we will have a big turnout of Indian fans from 7 June once we begin our quest for the ICC World Test Championship Mace, we are determined to win the championship and improve on our performance at Southampton two years ago.” The Ultimate Test will be a unique occasion for The Oval as this will be the first neutral Test (not involving England) to be staged at the historic venue which has hosted 104 Tests, including the first-ever Test to be played in England – 1880.

Tickets for the Ultimate Test went on general sale on 3 March, following a priority ballot for fans registered with the ICC, and seats for the Final have already been met with strong demand among fans.

Gardner and Brook seal ICC Player of the Month awards for February

Dubai, March 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the winners of the ICC Player of the Month awards for February 2023, with Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month, and England’s Harry Brook reclaiming the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. The outcomes of the ICC Player of the Month Awards for February replicate the results of December 2022, where both claimed their maiden awards following prolific months for their respective teams in short and long formats of the game.

Gardner is crowned the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for February after a series of outstanding performances inspired Australia’s successful defence of their Women’s T20 World Cup crown in South Africa. Taking regular wickets and chipping in with valuable runs throughout, she reinforced her status as the number one ranked T20I all-rounder in the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s Player Rankings, eventually capping a prolific campaign with the Player of the Tournament prize.

ICC Men’s Player of the Month Brook earns his second prize after once more demonstrating his rising stock in international cricket. The free-scoring batter has impressed in all formats, and recent performances in England’s resurgent Test side continue to outline his high potential. Scoring big once more in New Zealand last month, Brook’s brisk and fearless stroke play was a highlight, entertaining crowds in a dramatic Test series.

Gardner and Brook triumphed following a global vote conducted among media representatives, ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and fans registered at icc-cricket.com.

ICC Women’s Player of the Month, February 2023 – Ashleigh Gardner

Gardner’s tournament was littered with important contributions, and she excelled from the outset in the thrilling drama that characterised the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. In the opening match against a typically dangerous New Zealand side, she produced a dazzling bowling performance, taking five wickets for 12 runs to dismantle the White Ferns’ chase, and restrict them to a modest 76 all out in pursuit of Australia’s 173. With a total of 10 wickets during the tournament at an average of 12.50, the wicket-taking threat and impressive economy rate of Gardner continued to cause problems for opposing batters, but her contributions extended beyond just her bowling exploits.

Scoring 110 runs across five innings, her most telling contributions with the bat came in the latter stages. Faced with a below-par score in the semi-final, Gardner smashed a valuable 31 in 18 balls to take Australia to 172 for four, enough to keep India at bay and secure victory by five runs. Then, chipping in with a crucial 29 in the Final, and claiming the prized wicket of Marizanne Kapp with the ball, Gardner was named the Player of the Tournament while her and her teammates celebrated another T20 World Cup trophy.

Gardner claims the ICC Women’s Player of the Month from two other stars of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup; England power-hitter Nat Sciver, and South Africa’s talented opener Laura Wolvaardt, who were both nominated for strong campaigns. On reclaiming the ICC Women’s Player of the Month prize, Gardner commented: “Thank you to everyone who voted me the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. The past month has been ground-breaking for women’s cricket and it’s an exciting time for our sport.

“The T20 World Cup was a brilliant tournament, and playing the hosts South Africa in the Final in front of a packed crowd at Newlands was an incredible experience. “Our Australian team are fortunate to have a number of world-class players, I’m happy I was able to contribute to our team success over the course of the World Cup.” Former Zimbabwe international and ICC Player of the Month voting panel member, Pommie Mbangwa added, “In a month where many of her compatriots put up good performances and saw their team rewarded with another title, Ashleigh’s performances came at critical times and essentially ensured that they won a semi-final and the Final.

“She showed herself a player with the temperament for crunch situations which is a wonderful characteristic to possess.”

ICC Men’s Player of the Month, February 2023 – Harry Brook

After winning the ICC Player of the Month back in December for his pioneering approach to Test batting in England’s away series in Pakistan, Brook continued where he left off when arriving in New Zealand in February. Brook started the series with a fluid 89 in 81 balls, taking apart the familiar threat of the New Zealand bowling attack with aplomb. Following up with another half-century in the second innings, the 24-year-old claimed the Player of the Match award as they secured a thumping 267-run victory at Mount Maunganui.

The second Test in Wellington endured a thrilling climax, and Brook once again starred for England breaking records in the process. Scoring a magnificent 186 in the first innings which included 24 fours and 5 sixes, the young batter’s explosive innings gave England a considerable upper-hand as New Zealand were forced to follow-on. Despite eventually losing the match in dramatic fashion, Brook was named Player of the Series for his 329 runs at an average of 82.25. Brook overcomes fellow nominees Ravindra Jadeja and Gudakesh Motie to claim his second ICC Men’s Player of the Month, becoming the second player to win the award on two separate occasions along with 2022’s ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year, Babar Azam of Pakistan.

Reflecting on another ICC Men’s Player of the Month prize, Brook added, “To win this award twice in a matter of months is a real honour. I’d like to thank my teammates and management of the England teams, who have been supportive and back me to play to my strengths. “It has been a pretty good start to the year and I hope that we can continue to be built on what will be a huge summer and winter for the Men’s teams with an Ashes and aiming to win the 50-over ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India in the autumn, which I’m aiming to be part of both squads.”

Former Pakistan international and panellist in the ICC Player of the Month awards, Sana Mir added, “My choice for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month was Harry Brook because of the prolonged consistency he has shown and the fashion in which he made his runs during the last month. Younger batters such as Harry seem to be redefining Test batting at the moment, and that is what makes it even more special.” Fans can continue to vote every month for their favourite male and female cricketers across all formats of international cricket as part of the ICC Player of the Month initiative by registering at www.icc-cricket.com/awards.

Wolvaardt, who scored 53 in the semi-final against England and a valiant 61 against Australia in the final to finish as the most prolific batter in the tournament, has shot up eight places to sixth in the rankings. Brits’s Player of the Match effort of 68 in the semi-final sees her advance five places to 12th position.

Australia fast bowler Megan Schutt peaked at 805 in 2019 and is the only other woman to reach that barrier. Ecclestone is currently on 801 rating points.
