Teams unperturbed after rain washes out first day

Dubai, June 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):After a first day washout, the wait goes on for the start of the ICC World Test Championship Final, but the India team named will be ready for any conditions.

That is the view of India fielding coach R Sridhar, who does not expect any changes to the XI named for the game in Southampton.

While New Zealand’s final XI will not be confirmed until the toss, India has already decided on the team that will take on the Black Caps.

And even if rain could change the tactics, Sridhar is confident that the selection can perform in any conditions.

He said: “I think the XI which has been announced is an XI that takes the pitch and conditions out of the equation.

“I think it is an XI which can play and perform on any given surface, in any given weather conditions. Having said that, the toss is not yet over, so if it needs to be taken, a decision will be taken at the time of the toss.”

While a heavy day of rain put paid to the chances of any cricket on Friday, the possibility of a five-day Test remains thanks to the reserve day on Wednesday.

The ICC has confirmed the ICC World Test Championship Final reserve day could be utilised should the match not reach a result by the close of day five. The decision will be taken by the Match Officials on day five.

For now, the players have had to get used to the waiting game, but Sridhar believes that the experienced nature of the India team has helped in that regard.

He added: “To keep them in a good mental space, that is something that is very important because they are going to be on and off the field with the weather so they will have to know how to keep their concentration going, switching on, switching off.

“That is something all the players are aware of, they are a very experienced bunch of players. They have played a few finals, won a few tournaments and played a few Test matches, each one in that XI. So they all know how to do it and are in a good frame of mind, a good space.”

The Black Caps are yet to name a final XI for the match, with that expected to be decided by coach Gary Stead and captain Kane Williamson on Saturday.

For vice-captain Tom Latham, while there was understandable disappointment at not playing at all on day one, he admitted that it did not come as a huge surprise and praised the provision of a potential sixth day.

He said: “It’s disappointing – the rain today, it was forecast unfortunately, but it’s one of those things that as cricketers you need to adapt. It’s something we can’t control, it’s just about waiting and when we get the opportunity to come on, making sure we’re ready.

“The beauty of it is there is day six as well, so there is a little extra time that we can use then. We’ll wait and see and have a look tomorrow.

“I guess for us it’s just about waiting and trying to adapt to whatever weather conditions we’re facing, whether it’s tomorrow or whenever it may be. It’s important we aren’t caught on the hop and that we’re ready when called upon. We’ve been in this situation many times as cricketers, so it’s about trying to stay ready.

“Looking at conditions and the amount of water that has fallen since yesterday afternoon, there probably wasn’t a huge chance that we were going to play today. So guys have just been trying to relax, there has been a lot of table tennis, a lot of darts being played up in the team room. Guys are pretty relaxed and we’ll have to give it another shot tomorrow and see what happens.”

Williamson eager for New Zealand to put their best foot forward

Dubai, June 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):Kane Williamson wants New Zealand to use the biggest stage to show the world just how far they’ve come as he prepares to lead his side into the first-ever ICC World Test Championship Final.

The Black Caps were eighth in the ICC Test rankings as recently as 2013 but have been on the rise ever since and victory over England earlier this month ensured they head into the WTC Final against India as the world’s number one team in the five-day format.

Since the inaugural WTC began in 2019, New Zealand have got better with every passing series and Williamson is excited for his team to bring their best for what he believes will be an ‘incredible’ occasion at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

“There’s been a lot of growth over a period of time with so many challenges along the way every day but the team has bought into it and tried to move past those with a good attitude,” explained the Black Caps captain.

“There is a lot of hard work done over a long period of time to find ourselves here in the first final (of the WTC).

“It’s exciting but for us it’s just focusing on continuing that growth and trying to keep committing to the parts of our game that give us the best chance and that’s where I know the guys will be focusing on.

“We’re playing the best team in the world. It’s a really exciting occasion. It’s incredible.

“You have both teams coming to a neutral venue – it’s unique, an exciting occasion that both teams are looking forward to starting.

“It’s a one-off and in cricket, anything can happen. It will be widely followed and fans from more than just New Zealand and India are excited to watch it unfold. We’re just fortunate to be involved in it.”

Williamson was forced to sit out of the second Test against England due to an injured elbow but says he is ready to play in the WTC final, while also having a fully-fit playing group to choose from.

“Everybody is fit in the squad, which is a good thing. My elbow has improved, with the help of an injection a few days back, which has been nice,” he added.

“I’m still managing it but all in all, it’s certainly showing signs of improvement, which is good.”

Having just finished a Test series against England, New Zealand will be used to the pitch and weather conditions that the WTC Final will be played in.

But India have a bowling attack more than capable of taking 20 wickets anywhere in the world, with the quintet of Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja among the best on the planet.

And skipper Virat Kohli is expecting a high-quality Test match between the top two sides in the rankings, although he took issue with New Zealand being framed as ‘the nice guys’ of world cricket.

“I really don’t understand this term that was just used – I don’t think any other team has ‘bad guys’ in their team,” said Kohli.

“We get along very well off the field but when you step across the line, it’s business at the end of the day and you need to deal with it accordingly.

“It’s pretty serious stuff out there, it’s not something that is fun and games and played in a very low voltage environment.

“This is a huge game, a huge Test match and we are certainly looking forward to the opportunity that we have been waiting for a few years now.

“In Test cricket we have performed well and deserve to be on that field playing the brand of cricket we’ve played in the past few years.

“For us as a team, we have been on a quest for excellence for a while now and we will continue to be on that path regardless of what happens in this game.”

ICC supports UNICEF’s COVID-19 relief efforts in South Asia

Dubai, June 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):Launches fundraising campaign at the inaugural World Test Championship Final. The International Cricket Council (ICC) through its Cricket for Good initiative today launched a fundraising campaign to support UNICEF’s emergency COVID-19 response in South Asia. The campaign was launched at the inaugural World Test Championship Final being played in Southampton between India and New Zealand from June 18th and 22, 2021.

COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on South Asia, which is home to nearly 2 billion people, and more than a quarter of the world’s children. The sheer scale and speed of the latest surge of COVID-19 across the region has outstripped countries’ abilities to provide life-saving treatment and essential services.

The region has to date recorded more than 30 million COVID-19 cases and over 400,000 deaths. The virus has had a direct impact on children, with many more falling ill than before. Children are losing parents and caregivers to the virus, leaving many of them vulnerable and without parental care. Learning and protection issues continue to be a cause of concern, with lockdowns and closure of schools. The essential health services that women and children rely on are also at risk of being compromised: during the first wave of the pandemic, an estimated 228,000 children across South Asia died due to disruptions in health services.

As part of its COVID-19 response, UNICEF works closely with governments and partners in the region reaching families with information and technical support on health, child protection and education, water, sanitation, and hygiene as well as support in vaccine rollout.

ICC’s support to UNICEF at this critical time will harness the power and reach of cricket, one of the world’s most popular sports, to safeguard the lives and futures of children. As part of the campaign, ICC will leverage its audience base on its digital channels to contribute to UNICEF. ICC with UNICEF shall display joint appeals on its digital platforms, LED perimeter boards and replay screens at the venue, for its broadcast audiences to donate directly to UNICEF’s donation platform: https://help.unicef.org/icc.

In-game commentary will also reach out to audiences for their support.

George Laryea-Adjei, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia said: “The sheer speed and scale of infection across South Asia has been alarming, and fragile health systems have been pushed to the brink. UNICEF is on the ground with partners to deliver lifesaving support and ensure essential health services for children and women continue operating. ICC’s Cricket for Good initiative will allow us to raise vital funds to continue delivering lifesaving supplies and services to children and families in South Asia.”

Geoff Allardice, Acting CEO International Cricket Council said: “The devastation that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused in South Asia has been heart breaking with vulnerable children among the most affected. By partnering with UNICEF to support their COVID 19 relief work, we can use the global platform provided by the inaugural World Test Championship Final to raise urgent funds that can make a real difference. We appeal to cricket fans around the world to come together to show their support for the work of UNICEF at such a difficult time and donate to such a worthwhile cause.”

All funds raised through the fundraising campaign and received by UNICEF will be used for the UNICEF COVID-19 emergency response in South Asia. By partnering together, UNICEF and International Cricket Council will support communities and marginalized people to weather this storm and prevent further disruptions to essential health services for women and children.

In addition, ICC along with Tech Mahindra, the merchandise partner for the World Test Championship Final have launched a special COVID-19 relief range for the inaugural ICC WTC Final and 10% of the proceeds will go to UNICEF’s relief work in South Asia.
