Prof Sudhir Vinayak appointed as WFUMB President

Karachi, June 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): Professor Sudhir Vinayak, Chair of the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging at the Medical College, East Africa has been appointed as the President of the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) for a period of two years. The mission of WFUMB is to bring sustainable ultrasound programmes to underserved areas of the world to improve global healthcare through collaboration, communication, and education.

The President is elected once all the Federations (representing continents) have nominated their respective candidates. Professor Vinayak was nominated by the Mediterranean and African Society of Ultrasound (MASU), where he currently serves as the President. He was elected unopposed as other Federations did not submit candidates.

“It’s a great honour and pleasure to be appointed as the President of WFUMB having served as a member of its various committees for over 20 years and served on the Executive Board for 10 years. As the incoming President, my objective is to bring sustainable imaging and ultrasound programmes to the underserved areas of the world, especially in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. During my tenure, I will endeavour to take WFUMB to new heights and build great partnerships with AKU,” said Professor Vinayak.

Professor Vinayak has published numerous scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals as well as domestic scientific papers. He has written chapters for radiology textbooks and serves on various editorial boards. He has also delivered invited lectures in his area of expertise to international audiences. Professor Vinayak is currently the President-Elect of the International Society of Radiology (ISR). He has also served in various capacities as the past President, Kenya Association of Radiologists (KAR), past President, Kenya Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (KESUMB) and immediate past President, African Society of Radiology (ASR).

His research focus is on the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), thyroid and breast imaging. He also has a keen interest in obstetric imaging. Professor Vinayak has written numerous international guidelines on the use of ultrasound. He is also a Consultant Radiologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi.
