ICC agrees deal with SuperSport to show ICC cricket in 52 African territories

Dubai, April 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): The International Cricket Council today announced a new broadcast and digital deal with SuperSport International (Pty) Limited, which will bring ICC global events to fans across 52 territories in Africa.

The new direct deal will see the continuation of the successful partnership with SuperSport in the Sub-Saharan region which has been in place since 2007. The broadcaster, which has 22.1 million subscribers across the 52 territories, provides an excellent platform to grow the cricket fan base and engage more people with cricket in Africa in line with the global growth strategy for the sport.

The deal includes the next eight years of rights for all matches of the 12 men’s senior events up until the end of 2031, including the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 which will take place on African soil in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia for the first time since 2003.

The partnership will also include every match for the next four years of women’s events, which following the success of the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, has seen an incredible increase in interest, and left a wonderful legacy for women’s cricket. There was huge growth in terms of South Africa viewership for the 2023 event, shattering past records with an increase of 790% of fans tuning in to support the World Cup compared to 2020.

In addition, all matches of all U19 World Cups, both men’s and women’s, will be covered as part of the deal. Digitally, fans will be able to access all the ICC major event content via the DStv app.

ICC Chief Executive, Geoff Allardice said: “We are delighted to be continuing our successful and proven partnership with SuperSport. There is a real opportunity for more fans to engage with ICC events and enjoy cricket across the 52 territories.

“Following the hugely successful ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 and the legacy left for women’s cricket in South Africa, I am confident that this strategic partnership will play a major part in building the momentum for women’s sport in the region too.”

MultiChoice South Africa CEO, Marc Jury said: “We are delighted to have secured another deal with the ICC, continuing our excellent partnership. We are excited to deliver ICC cricket coverage to Africa for the next few years and provide new experiences for fans across the continent.”

PPP Senator demands immediate provision of gas supply or removal of Minister of State and MD SSGC

Karachi, April 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): Senator Waqar Mehdi, the General Secretary of Pakistan People’s Party Sindh chapter, has said that Sindh province is going through the worst gas crisis, and from Karachi to Kashmore, especially the domestic consumers are bearing the brunt of gas shutdown.

According to the statement issued, Senator Waqar Mehdi said that the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources, and MD Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) have not kept their promises and announcements. He said that during the first 20 days of Ramadan, the people of Sindh have faced severe hardships due to non-supply of gas, adding that it is regrettable that the province, which meets 70% of the country’s gas needs, has been deprived of its own natural resources. “I request Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ask the Minister of State why he gave false consolation to the people through the media and parliament? And why the government made false promises to the people of Sindh,” he added.

Senator Mehdi said that MD SSGC, who was appointed by the Imran Khan regime, is also the apple of the eye of the current Minister of State as he is not ready to take any action against the said officer, who has added to the hardships of the people.

PPP Senator demanded the Prime Minister to immediately convene a meeting on the issue of gas crisis in Sindh and seek an explanation from the Minister of State regarding his actions. He urged that if the said Minister is not interested in solving the problems faced by the people, he should be replaced by a worhthy member of the National Assembly. He further said that the appointment of the current MD SSGC should also be reviewed immediately and a senior officer should be appointed who cares about the public should be appointed so that the people of Sindh can at least get gas for cooking, which they have the first right to get.

Much-anticipated Pakistan-New Zealand T20Is commence tomorrow

Lahore, April 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): After witnessing a nail-biting finish in the final of the HBL Pakistan Super League 8 just a month ago, the fans in Lahore are set to be treated with what promise to be exciting contests when Pakistan take on New Zealand in the first three of the five-match T20 International series at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Babar Azam-led Pakistan will play their first T20I here since October 2022, when they played England in the lead-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Pakistan have won 10 of the 18 matches here since 2015 and the venue has provided viewers action their money’s worth with 8.13 runs being scored per over.

For the Kiwis, it is an unchartered territory as they have never played a T20I in Pakistan. They will hope to bank on the experience of their recent tour of Karachi when they played two Tests and three One-Day Internationals across December and January and the data available to them about the venue, but playing in Gaddafi Stadium against a full-fledged Pakistan side will be a challenging ask.

Pakistan already have an upper-hand as they have defeated New Zealand four times in the last five matches, the most recent one being a convincing seven-wicket win in the T20 World Cup semi-final in Sydney. That only defeat was during the tri-series in Christchurch, which Pakistan won, just before the World Cup.

Babar Azam: “It is a great feeling to be back in Lahore in Pakistan colours. This promises to be an exciting series as we bring the exciting young talent and the experience of senior players together in this solid squad.

“The T20 World Cup is over a year away and we will look to utilise the next five games to see where we stand. They will also help us gear up for the crucial five-match ODI series that follows as more or less we have the same players in this team and that series will provide us a good opportunity to prepare for the Asia Cup and World Cup later in the year.”

Tom Latham: “It is an exciting tour for our side and we know we’re coming up against a quality Pakistan team who will be a huge challenge. We’re obviously missing a few of our senior players, but that’s going to offer opportunities to others and I know the team are really looking forward to testing themselves.

“Conditions are completely different to what we’re used to back home and it’s going to be important that we adapt as quickly as possible. We’ll lean on the experiences we had on the tour here a couple of months ago where we managed to play some good cricket in both the Test and ODI series.

“The HBL PSL has also just been here so we will try and get as much information as we can, but it will ultimately be about adapting as quickly as possible.”

Gaddafi Stadium will stage T20I matches on 14, 15 and 17 April before the action shifts to Rawalpindi where the last two games of the series will be played on 20 and 24 April.

Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Ihsanullah, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood and Zaman Khan

New Zealand squad: Tom Latham (captain, wk), Chad Bowes, Mark Chapman, Dane Cleaver, Matt Henry, Ben Lister, Adam Milne, Cole McConchie, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Will Young
