Advancing Climate Diplomacy in the Global South, 22 June 2023

Islamabad, June 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): Webinar on Advancing Climate Diplomacy in the Global South: The Road to COP28

On 22nd June 2023, COMSATS secretariat organized a webinar on Climate diplomacy. Aim of the webinar was to discuss different economic, technological, and political routes that are available for the countries situated in Global South. In this pre COP28 discussion session, several prominent figures were invited to speak including Professor Jinghua Cao, Professor Enrique Forero, Mr. Zitouni Ould Dada, Mr. Sohail Malik and Ambassador Dr. Zakaria Nafees.

Dr. Zainab Khalid represented CCRD in this Webinar.

This discussion highlighted the challenges that climatically vulnerable countries in Global South are currently facing. The esteemed speakers talked about the possible solutions that would ensure a safe future for the world. Professor Cao specifically highlighted the efforts that Chinese government is ensuring via different national and international projects to make sure that the carbon emissions are reduced. He also informed that China aims to become carbon neutral by 2060. In his remarks, Amb. Dr. Zakaria Nafees emphasized the importance of collective action on a global level.

He said that climate change is a global problem and unless all countries work together towards SDGs and mitigation of climate change impacts, it is unlikely that the world will survive the horrific projected future. Mr. Ould Dada shared his views on climate diplomacy and commented on the strengths of regional partnerships especially in the Global South region. He noted that the sociocultural similarities in the regional countries provide them with the opportunity to foster empowering relationships which result in contextual and tailored solutions to problems.

The webinar was an important discussion platform before the commencement of COP28 in Abu Dhabi later this year. Innovative strategies of Climate Diplomacy from the Global South (especially nature-based solutions) will help in continuation of the global negotiations [from CPOP27 in Sharam El Shiekh] regarding climate financing, loss and damage and other climate reparation avenues.
