Sargodha: The Institute of Chemistry at the University of Sargodha recently hosted a National Symposium on Forensic Chemistry and an International Symposium on Phytochemicals and Functional Foods. These events, part of Research Arena 2025, attracted significant participation from students, faculty, and experts in the respective fields.
The National Symposium, titled “Exploring Forensic Chemistry: From Academic Inquiry to Real-World Application,” saw the participation of approximately 280 attendees, including students and faculty from various academic departments. Director of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sher, emphasized the integral role of forensic chemistry in the curriculum and its impact on graduates entering professional forensic agencies.
During the symposium, Dean Faculty of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Aamir Ali, underscored the necessity of connecting academic insights with practical applications. Imran Nadeem Khan from the Crime Scene Investigation Unit shared insights on crime scene management and evidence collection, while Ameer Hur from the National Forensic Agency in Islamabad discussed the importance of inter-departmental collaboration in resolving complex cases. Coordination was managed by Dr. Naeem Ul Hassan and Dr. Fayyaz ur Rehman.
The International Symposium, entitled “Phytochemicals as High-Value Ingredients for the Development of Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals,” attracted around 120 participants. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sher and Prof. Dr. Aamir Ali highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research on phytochemicals.
Keynote speakers included Prof. Dr. Farooq Anwar, who addressed phytochemical extraction and nutraceutical applications; Prof. Aouf Abdel Hakeim from Algeria, who focused on phytochemicals in combating multi-drug-resistant bacteria; and Dr. Muhammad Shahid from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, who discussed advanced extraction techniques. Dr. Fayyaz ur Rehman coordinated the event.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas attended both symposia, advocating for research-driven education and emphasizing the role of academic forums in fostering innovation and practical learning.
