KARACHI: Altaf Shakoor, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the importance of addressing governance failures over the creation of new administrative units in Pakistan. Speaking on Sunday, Shakoor highlighted that systemic corruption, mismanagement of mega projects, and fiscal leakages are the driving forces behind the country's ongoing crisis.

According to Pasban Democratic Party, Shakoor pointed out that every child born in Pakistan today inherits a substantial government debt, emphasizing that the nation's crisis stems from broken governance rather than its administrative borders. He cited official data from the Ministry of Finance, revealing that total public debt surged to Rs. 80.5 trillion by June 2025, consuming a significant portion of federal revenues and affecting essential services like healthcare and education.

Shakoor criticized the energy sector's governance failure, noting that delayed reforms and poor oversight resulted in a Rs. 1.275 trillion bank-financed bailout in 2025. He also highlighted the chronic losses of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and structural gaps in national revenue collection as contributing factors to the economic decline.

He argued that the creation of new provinces would not address these fundamental issues. Instead, he called for strict institutional accountability and reforms in public financial management to prevent fiscal leakages and improve basic services. Shakoor concluded by stating that without these reforms, the proposal to create new provinces remains an expensive distraction for Pakistan's economy.
