New York, A glittering array of sports stars gathered at the newly completed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium for a first look at the 34,000-seat venue, set to host its inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match between Sri Lanka and South Africa on June 3, 2024. The event marked a significant milestone in sports history as it introduced one of the world’s largest temporary stadiums dedicated to cricket.
According to International Cricket Council, the unveiling was attended by ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Ambassador Usain Bolt, alongside cricket greats such as Sir Curtly Ambrose, Shoaib Malik, and Liam Plunkett, and USA players Corey Anderson and Monank Patel. They were joined by New York sporting legends from various disciplines, including John Starks of the NBA, Elena Delle Donne of the WNBA, and NFL star Victor Cruz, among others. The assembly of sports talent highlighted the cross-sport support for cricket’s expansion in the United States.
The stadium’s design features include general admission stands with views of the Manhattan skyline, luxury Cabana and Corner Club seating, and a high-quality playing surface using Bermuda grass developed specifically for the event. The venue will host eight World Cup matches, offering a mix of general and premium hospitality options.
The World Cup festivities in the United States will commence with a match between the USA and Canada on June 1 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas, signaling the start of what promises to be an unforgettable series of matches co-hosted with the West Indies across various venues.
