Lahore, The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has announced the recipients of the 2023-24 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. This year’s honorees are Dr. Abubakr Muhammad, Dr. Agha Ali Raza, Dr. Hassan Jaleel, Ms. Hiba Akbar, and Ms. Marva Khan Cheema. The award recognizes outstanding educators who have significantly impacted learning and teaching at LUMS through their innovative and inspirational approaches.
According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, the selection process was competitive, with 24 faculty members initially nominated, and 11 comprehensive portfolios reviewed by the Selection Committee. Dr. Muhammad Hamad Alizai, Director of the LUMS Learning Institute, praised the winners for their commitment to creating an innovative and engaging learning environment, noting their role as leaders in education at LUMS.
Each award recipient brings a unique teaching style and expertise to their respective fields:
Dr. Abubakr Muhammad, a professor of Electrical Engineering, is recognized for his dynamic and innovative teaching methods, including the integration of diverse media and field trips to connect theoretical principles with real-world applications. His significant contributions to curriculum development, particularly in robotics and sustainability, have made a profound impact on students and the academic community.
Dr. Agha Ali Raza, from the Computer Science department, has transformed the Machine Learning curriculum to make it more accessible and engaging, significantly increasing course enrollment and fostering a deeper understanding of AI across disciplines.
Dr. Hassan Jaleel, also from Electrical Engineering, combines theoretical rigor with practical application, particularly in courses like Feedback Control Systems and Multi-agent Systems, preparing students for complex real-world engineering challenges.
Ms. Hiba Akbar, from the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law, has developed innovative legal courses that emphasize the real-world application of law, helping students engage with contemporary legal debates and preparing them to address critical issues within the Pakistani legal system.
Ms. Marva Khan Cheema, another standout from the School of Law, focuses on public law and human rights, incorporating active learning techniques that promote critical thinking and a deeper understanding of legal principles, alongside her contributions to legal scholarship and community advocacy.
