University of Cambridge and University of Peshawar Collaborate on Archaeological Heritage Mapping

Peshawar, The University of Peshawar has entered into a significant collaboration with the University of Cambridge’s Macdonald Institute for Archaeological Research to advance the Mapping Archaeological Heritage in South Asia (MAHSA) Project. This joint initiative aims to document and preserve the rich cultural heritage of South Asia.

According to University of Peshawar, the collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, with the project presentation held at the SSAQ Museum of Archaeology. Dr. Rebecca Roberts, Project Coordinator from Cambridge, alongside Ms. Afifa Khan, Research Assistant and Fieldwork Coordinator for Pakistan, led the presentation. They outlined the project’s goals and the innovative methodologies and technologies that will be employed in the mapping of archaeological sites.

Prof. Dr. Zakirullah Jan from the University of Peshawar has been appointed as the focal person for this project, which has already seen enthusiastic involvement from faculty and students of the Archaeology and Tourism departments. This partnership marks a pivotal step in enhancing academic research and the practical application of modern archaeological techniques, with the ultimate goal of preserving and elucidating the historical narratives of the region’s archaeological sites.
