Sindh High Court Issues Notice to SM Law College and University of Karachi Officials Over Enrollment Dispute

Karachi, The Sindh High Court has ordered the issuance of notices to the Principal of SM Law College, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi, and the Secretary of Education in response to a constitutional petition concerning the enrollment of law students. The court has summoned these parties to appear on November 29 to address the allegations raised.

According to the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), the petition, filed by Advocate Khurram Lakhani on the instructions of PDP Chairman Altaf Shakoor, highlights an issue affecting law students at SM Law College. It alleges that out of 150 students admitted in 2022, only 100 were officially enrolled as per the merit list, while the remaining 50 were informed of their admission through phone calls and subsequently charged substantial fees for admission, registration, and enrollment. Despite studying for a year, these 50 students were later informed by the college principal that their enrollment had not been processed by the University of Karachi.

This situation has raised significant concerns, as the University of Karachi’s syndicate rules authorize law colleges in Karachi, including the university itself, to admit only 100 students. The affected students face the possibility of being unable to sit for their upcoming exams, potentially losing a year of their academic progress.

Chairman Altaf Shakoor of the PDP assured the students that the party would not tolerate such alleged mistreatment and would fight constitutionally against this perceived injustice. The PDP’s legal efforts have a history of addressing and resolving similar issues through constitutional means, as evidenced by their past successes in similar cases.

The court’s decision to issue notices is a crucial step in addressing the concerns raised by the students and ensuring that the matter is resolved in accordance with the law and educational regulations.
