Pakistan Sunni Tehreek Leader Alleges Corruption in Awqaf Department

Karachi, Secretary General of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, Allama Bilal Saleem Qardi Shami, has accused the Awqaf Department of widespread corruption. During a media interaction at various shrines, he alleged that the department mismanages funds and offerings from devotees, highlighting significant operational and ethical issues within the organization.

According to Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, Allama Bilal Saleem Qardi Shami claimed that the offerings given by devotees at shrines are being misappropriated by the Awqaf Department. He criticized the department for its lack of transparency in reporting how these funds are utilized and the absence of essential facilities at the shrines. Shami pointed out that no arrangements are made by the department during significant religious events like Thursdays or the Urs of Sahib Mazar.

The Secretary General also alleged that the department allows the practice of covering shrines with multiple cloaks as a means to collect money, despite this being forbidden. He accused the facilitators within the Awqaf Department of returning these cloaks to shops for resale and similarly mismanaging flowers and other offerings.

Further accusations include the granting of various contracts related to shrine management without proper tender processes, favoring certain facilitators. These contracts include parking, washrooms, and other services around the shrines. Shami also raised concerns about the selling of drugs in the vicinity of these holy sites.

He demanded that the Awqaf Department prepare and disclose an audit report to identify individuals responsible for embezzling funds. Allama Bilal Saleem Qardi Shami warned that if the department does not address these issues promptly, Pakistan Sunni Tehreek would protest against the alleged corruption at shrines across the country.
