Lahore, The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture commemorated World Fisheries Day with a series of events under the theme “Cast the Net.” The activities, held at the Ravi Campus in Pattoki, included an awareness walk, a seminar, a business ideas competition, and fishing activities, all aimed at highlighting the significance of fisheries in national economy and food security.
According to the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Dr. Muhammad Abid, Director (Aquaculture) of the Department of Fisheries Punjab, served as the chief guest at the seminar. Other notable attendees included Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Prof. Dr. Saima, Chairman Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Dr. Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman, and additional fisheries professionals and students.
Dr. Abid, in his seminar address, emphasized the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in Pakistan’s economy and food security. He discussed various projects launched by the Fisheries Department to enhance production and awareness of fish consumption habits. He also mentioned the department’s initiatives in providing guidance for constructing fish farms, hatcheries, and conservation efforts through fingerlings stock replenishment programs.
Dr. Muhammad Hafeez-ur-Rehman highlighted the importance of maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems and sustainable fish stocks. He stressed UVAS’s role in the development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector through education, training, research, and development. His remarks underscored the department’s commitment to contributing to the country’s economic and social development.
Prof. Dr. Saima spoke about the need to increase awareness of fish-eating habits and address challenges in the sector, including fish diseases and water pollution.
The event also included an awareness walk led by Dr. Hafeez-ur-Rehman and Dr. Abid, with substantial participation from students and faculty. The day concluded with the distribution of prizes to winners of the business idea competition, celebrating innovative contributions to the fisheries sector.
