Advancing Climate Diplomacy in the Global South, 22 June 2023

Islamabad, June 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): Webinar on Advancing Climate Diplomacy in the Global South: The Road to COP28

On 22nd June 2023, COMSATS secretariat organized a webinar on Climate diplomacy. Aim of the webinar was to discuss different economic, technological, and political routes that are available for the countries situated in Global South. In this pre COP28 discussion session, several prominent figures were invited to speak including Professor Jinghua Cao, Professor Enrique Forero, Mr. Zitouni Ould Dada, Mr. Sohail Malik and Ambassador Dr. Zakaria Nafees.

Dr. Zainab Khalid represented CCRD in this Webinar.

This discussion highlighted the challenges that climatically vulnerable countries in Global South are currently facing. The esteemed speakers talked about the possible solutions that would ensure a safe future for the world. Professor Cao specifically highlighted the efforts that Chinese government is ensuring via different national and international projects to make sure that the carbon emissions are reduced. He also informed that China aims to become carbon neutral by 2060. In his remarks, Amb. Dr. Zakaria Nafees emphasized the importance of collective action on a global level.

He said that climate change is a global problem and unless all countries work together towards SDGs and mitigation of climate change impacts, it is unlikely that the world will survive the horrific projected future. Mr. Ould Dada shared his views on climate diplomacy and commented on the strengths of regional partnerships especially in the Global South region. He noted that the sociocultural similarities in the regional countries provide them with the opportunity to foster empowering relationships which result in contextual and tailored solutions to problems.

The webinar was an important discussion platform before the commencement of COP28 in Abu Dhabi later this year. Innovative strategies of Climate Diplomacy from the Global South (especially nature-based solutions) will help in continuation of the global negotiations [from CPOP27 in Sharam El Shiekh] regarding climate financing, loss and damage and other climate reparation avenues.

Van Beek revels in instant redemption after super over heroics

Dubai, June 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): Following a dramatic tie in Harare, van Beek clubbed 30 from six Jason Holder deliveries before taking on bowling responsibilities and claiming two for eight. The feeling was particularly sweet for the all-rounder following the ending to his side’s run chase, when he fell to the final delivery of the 50th over with just a single required. “The amount of games I have lost from those situations, it was just satisfying to get across the line,” he said.

“I just backed my skill – if you miss, I am going to hit it. I was pretty disappointed with the last ball that I chunked it to mid-on. “I’m thankful I got a little bit of redemption. I thought I wanted to give myself a chance and when that 49th overcame, I wanted to go after it.” Netherlands’ response to West Indies’ imposing total of 374 for six saw several batters chip in, with the rapid 143-run stand between centurion Teja Nidamanuru, who made 111 from 76 deliveries, and skipper Scott Edwards (67) particularly crucial.

Van Beek added a 14-ball 28 at the death before shining in the super over and hopes this can act as a springboard as his side prepare for the Super Six stage, with Netherlands looking to qualify for their first ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup since 2011. “We wanted to do something special,” van Beek added. “To watch Scotty [Edwards] and Teja Nidamanuru out there, the more they batted, the more we believed.

“I have been playing for a long time and this result is testament to the culture that we have built and the learnings we have taken through the last 18-19 months. “Now we have a chance to go to the World Cup in India and that is really huge.” West Indies, by contrast, have an uphill battle on their hands if they are to make it to India. They enter the Super Six without a point to their name following their second consecutive defeat, leaving captain Shai Hope a frustrated figure.

“We let ourselves down there,” he said. “I could not see us scoring 375 and losing the game. “Credit to Netherlands for chasing that down. Cricket is not played in one half. We knew we had to bowl well but I always thought 375 would be enough. “We definitely need to learn from this. We know what we have to do now. It is an unfortunate situation we have put ourselves in, but it is what it is.”

Leask backs in-form Scotland to build on strong start

Dubai, June 26, 2023 (PPI-OT): Michael Leask has backed Scotland to keep sending ‘shockwaves’ through the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 ahead of their toughest tests yet. The in-form Scots have beaten Ireland, United Arab Emirates and Oman in their opening three games to seal a spot in the Super Six and will round off their group stage campaign against fellow unbeaten side Sri Lanka on Tuesday. Having missed out on qualification for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 by a whisker, a rain-affected five-run defeat against West Indies ending their chances, Leask hopes they can use their current confidence to ensure a reversal in their fortunes this time around.

“We are an associate nation playing against Test-playing nations but we have ticked off one Test-playing nation [Ireland] already, so we want to keep doing the same,” he said. “We are not here to make up the numbers. We have good depth and a nice blend of youth and experience, so why can’t we send shockwaves through the competition and do it for the associate nations? “Sri Lanka have been playing well but so have we. They are being tipped as favourites and they pose a slightly different challenge, which is a great test of us as a team.

“It’s an exciting test for us and we are going in full of confidence.”

Leask was key to Scotland laying down an early marker, blasting an unbeaten 91 from 61 deliveries to lead his side to a thrilling last-ball victory over Ireland. That marked the first of several impressive individual displays among a team who are seeing different players step up when it matters, a category the 32-year-old is delighted to find himself part of.

“The Ireland game was one of my favourite wins,” he said.

“To do it in a World Cup Qualifier when they had us on the ropes was great. We look back at the T20 World Cup in Australia last year when we had them on the ropes and they did the same to us, so to reverse that was particularly satisfying. “I’ve been in the team for a long time without doing an awful lot at times, a couple of fifties here and there, but in those crunch games I’ve sometimes gifted it away without seeing it home.

“At the moment, I feel I’m a lot more level-headed and I’m fighting until the bitter end. It was satisfying to take command and be the man who was there at the end finishing it off.” Sri Lanka are the first of several heavyweights Scotland will have to topple if they are to qualify for their fourth ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Hosts Zimbabwe, familiar foes Netherlands and West Indies – who Scotland defeated at last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – will also lie in wait but Leask is relishing the challenge. “We’ll be hit with a bit of pace from certain teams, like West Indies, and Zimbabwe will have the backing of the home crowd – but they are great occasions,” he said.

“We played in Nepal in front of 15,000 fans, and it’s great to have an atmosphere at these games. It boosts you as a cricketer knowing you’re at a global event playing in front of a big crowd. “Likewise with Netherlands, we’ve had a few good games with them in the past and it will be nice to take them head-on again.”
