Rawalpindi, May 31, 2023 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Scheme, Phase-III has been officially launched by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan to provide laptops to talented students. The project aims to give opportunities in the form of laptops to the young and talented students studying in public sector Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) across the country and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. In this regard, 100,000 laptops would be awarded to talented students on merit through online transparent system.

Interested students have to apply/register themselves online on the web portal (www.pmyp.gov.pk) for this scheme. Complete information regarding the eligibility criteria and the procedure to apply is mentioned in the portal.

Lahore, May 31, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), University of the Punjab, Lahore organized a lecture on May 30, 2023 (Tuesday) at 12:30 p.m. on “Sri – Lanka: Nation Ruled to National Rule.” Dr. Shanti Kumar Hettiarachchi, Professor, School of the Religion and Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Minhaj University, Lahore was guest speaker. The guest speaker started the discussion with a brief historical background of Sri- Lanka in colonial context. He also threw light on geographical location and after makeup of the country to highlight its significance in South Asian region.

After shedding light on the colonial history of Sri-Lanka, he informed the audience about neo colonialism which is still prevalent in the international community of states. He also drew comparative analysis of both Sri-Lanka and Pakistan in colonial context. He concluded his discussion with the argument that Sri-Lanka, one a colonized country, is still not completely free from colonialism through apparently there is a national rule in the country of the recent wave of violence in Sri-Lanka.

All faculty members, M.Phil./Ph.D. scholars of the CSAS and various department of University of the Punjab, Lahore attended the event in which research scholars and the students participated actively.

Lahore, May 31, 2023 (PPI-OT): Advisor to the Prime Minister Mr Khawaja Ahmed Hassan has said that we have to take steps to create the spirit of entrepreneurship in our youth so that they can become job providers instead of job seekers. He expressed these views while addressing the ‘Entrepreneurship Gala 2023’ organized by Punjab University Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. On this occasion, PU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, Dean Faculty of Agricultural Sciences Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Haider, faculty members and a large number of students were present. In his address, Mr Hassan said that organizing such events to guide the students in the right direction was commendable.

He said that there was a need to promote entrepreneurship to improve the country’s economic situation. Dr Khalid Mahmood said that Punjab University was the best educational institution of Pakistan which had always produced capable people in every field. He also visited the stalls set up by the students. Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Haider said that the faculty members of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences guided the students to improve their skills along with education. He said that Agricultural Sciences had gained its place in QS ranking very soon. He appreciated the efforts of Dr Bilal Chattha, Muhammad Arsalan Abbas and Muhammad Zubair for making arrangements for the event.

Karachi, May 31, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, in collaboration with the National Institute of Banking and Finance (NIBAF) Islamabad, has inaugurated a dedicated facility in the federal capital. The inauguration was attended by more than 200 participants from diverse fields. Focusing on IBA Karachi’s executive and organizational development philosophy, the new office will offer leadership and management development programs for family businesses, public sectors, state-owned enterprises, and corporates in the northern regions. IBA aims to bring opportunities for organizations and individuals through action learning-based capacity building initiatives, research, forums, think tanks, and consultancies. This venture will help meet the increasing demands of today’s business world.

Attendees from IBA included Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director; Dr. Asad Ilyas, Registrar; Dr. Abdullah Zafar Sheikh, Dean, School of Business Studies (SBS); Dr. Shakeel Khoja, Dean, School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS); Dr. Irum Saba, Associate Professor, SBS; Kamran Bilgrami, Director CEE; Dr. Sharjeel Hasnie, Head of Testing Services; and members of the Board of Governors (BoG), namely, Nadeem Hussain, Saba Kamal and Mohammed Sohail, Alumni Representative on the BoG.

The event commenced with a welcome note from IBA alumnus and MOC, Sibtain Naqvi. The IBA Islamabad Office at NIBAF was inaugurated by Akif Saeed, Chief Guest and Chairman, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan; Riaz Chunara, Managing Director, NIBAF; and Dr. Zaidi. Expressing his enthusiasm for the collaboration, Mr. Bilgrami stated, “This transformative partnership will open new avenues for our students and faculty to engage with industry professionals. By combining our strengths, we can bridge the gap between academia and industry and create a positive impact on education, fostering innovation in Pakistan.”

Mr. Chunara emphasized the importance of academia-industry collaboration, stating, “We believe that through this partnership, we can address critical issues such as corporate governance and digital transformation. By working together, we can foster a culture of innovation and equip professionals with the skills needed to excel in their respective fields.”

Commenting on IBA’s new facility, Dr. Zaidi said: “I am truly impressed by the transformative potential of this collaboration between IBA and NIBAF. This strategic alliance opens new horizons for executive education and knowledge exchange, particularly in the areas of corporate governance, public policy, and digital transformation. I am confident that this partnership will pave the way for impactful initiatives and create a lasting impact on our education and learning landscape.” He further added that together, we can empower professionals across various sectors to enhance their skills and contribute to the progress of Pakistan.

A panel discussion on the future of executive education in Pakistan also took place. Panellists included Sadia Khan, Javed Iqbal, and Dr. Khoja. CEE Trainer, Bulent Sohail, moderated the discussion. Earlier, IBA and NIBAF inked an MoU to establish a remote IBA office at NIBAF, Islamabad. Under this agreement, the two institutes will offer joint leadership and management development programs. Mementos were presented to the esteemed guests by Dr. Zaidi. Mr. Bilgrami concluded the evening by sharing his final thoughts and thanking the attendees for their participation. The evening came to an end with a networking dinner.

Karachi, May 31, 2023 (PPI-OT): School of Business Studies (SBS), Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, organized an International Conference 2023 on ‘Sustainability: Global and Local Challenges’ at Main Campus, IBA. Esteemed local and international academicians, researchers, practitioners, students and speakers participated in the conference. Executive Director, IBA Karachi, Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, welcomed the scholars and researchers to the conference and anticipated a comprehensive conference where research papers will be presented and intellectual discourses will ensue on different aspects of business, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Shedding light on the path to sustainability, Dean SBS and Conference Chair, Dr. Abdullah Zafar Sheikh, gave the inaugural speech and welcomed the attendees. Dr. Sheikh stated, “The conference’s primary emphasis lies in building a sustainable future through academia’s pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and responsible stewardship by fostering effective teaching methods and generating impactful intellectual contributions. On this platform, the faculty and students of SBS will collaborate and engage with the industry and corporate leaders to create distinctive alliances aimed at solving global and local challenges.”

Associate Professor SBS and Conference Convener, Dr. Irum Saba gave introductory remarks and said, “It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2nd IBA School of Business Studies International Conference, 2023. With the escalating significance of sustainability in the wake of pressing global issues including, climate change, resource scarcity, and social disparities, academia plays a crucial role in exploring and tackling these complex concerns.” She added that sustainability entails adopting a comprehensive perspective on development, and acknowledging the interdependencies among economic, financial, social, and environmental systems. Furthermore, in the realm of academia, it necessitates a scholarly approach to studying, analysing and proposing solutions that foster long-term prosperity and fortitude while considering the multifaceted dimensions of sustainability. Dr. Saba shared that 115 research paper submissions were received from world over out of which 40 were selected to be presented at the conference.

Director Infrastructure, Housing and SME Finance Department, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Chief Guest, Dr. Mian Farooq Haq commended IBA for arranging the conference on today’s pressing challenges of sustainability and climate change. He said that sustainability effects environmental issues, social equity and economic development. He added that climate change is taking place across the globe and drastically affecting many countries including Pakistan in form of record-breaking floods and increasing temperatures. In the past 2 decades Pakistan has faced 173 climatic incidents leading to huge economic losses and damages.

He stated that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030 agenda provides guidance towards achieving sustainability goals as the UN has declared this decade as that of action. Focusing on poverty, gender equality and climate change, SBP is laying down practices to contribute towards mitigating the challenges of sustainability by providing guidelines to national banks.

He urged the academia to contribute to sustainability challenges in form of research, policy recommendations and fostering collaborations among businesses, governments and communities. He emphasized that SBP is committed to contributing to the agenda of sustainability and its challenges can only be addressed through collective actions. Several panel discussions, keynote addresses and parallel technical sessions took place on both days of the conference addressing different facets of sustainability, climate change and environmental issues.
