Anita Zaidi’s clarion call for fresh graduates

Karachi, June 20, 2023 (PPI-OT): Anita Zaidi, President of the Gender Equality Division at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation recently delivered a powerful address to the University of Central Asia (UCA) Class of 2023. Anita Zaidi is an alumna of Aga Khan University having achieved a medical degree with a specialization in paediatric infectious diseases in 1988. She later did further training at Duke University, Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard School of Public Health. Reflecting on her own graduation, she recalls the profound impact of a simple message she received from His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan: “Serve Pakistan”. These two words became a guiding light, directing her path towards becoming a paediatrician and serving her homeland.

Anita chose to return to Pakistan and was ready to offer her skills and knowledge to make her country better. She faced many challenges, but did not get overwhelmed. While speaking to the graduates, Anita encouraged them to “Start at square one and take a step” emphasizing the importance of taking that first small step, knowing that every subsequent step would build upon the last.

In 2014, Anita made the hard decision of leaving Pakistan and join the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington. In her new role, she is focused on breaking down barriers that hold back women and girls. Gender inequality is another barrier that Anita passionately addresses. In 2021, she was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine for global leadership in paediatric infectious disease research and capacity development for improving new-born and child survival in LMICs.

Drawing from her own experiences and current role, she highlights the need to champion equal opportunities and respect for women. She left the UCA graduates with a sense of purpose and hope, reminding them that their university experience was not merely a period of academic growth, but a transformative journey that equipped them to make a positive impact. “I hope you apply the knowledge and experience you’ve gained at UCA to make life better for those around you, and more. I hope you answer the call to serve and use that as a guiding light.”

UOL’s alumnus explores the efficacy of the Chinese model of sports tourism in Pakistan

Lahore, June 20, 2023 (PPI-OT): Sports tourism, the experience of travelling to engage in or view sporting events, is now being acknowledged even by the tourist industry as a significant segment of tourism. It contributes a great deal to the global economy and has become a significant arsenal for government administrators to regenerate local economies. If properly developed and managed, sports tourism can help achieve sustainable development in a distinct way. However, in Pakistan, not much has been done to develop sports tourism. Mr Huang Liang (Int’l PhD Alumnus, Department of Sports Sciences and Physical Education, the University of Lahore (UOL)) addressed this developmental gap through his recently presented PhD research.

Mr Liang conducted his research under the title “Integration and development of sports tourism in Pakistan with China’s model”. His research was anchored on the development of sports tourism, for which he explored the efficacy of introducing the Chinese model of sports tourism in Pakistan. In his research study, Mr Liang adopted a qualitative research method and conducted interviews in 16 cities, incorporating the perspectives of research experts, tourism companies, sports clubs, and government administrations. Moreover, he also conducted an analysis of several main conditions projected in the Chinese model of sports tourism development.

His analysis revealed that the development of sports tourism in Pakistan is substantively lagging because of the obsolete infrastructure, which hinders the implication of the Chinese model. According to him, Pakistan also suffers from poor security conditions and lacks a reasonable sports management policy. Despite all these shortcomings, Pakistan still has abundant sports and natural resources and a huge consumer market. Mr Liang claimed that with a period of unremitting progress, sports tourism in Pakistan might flourish.

According to him, the development of sports tourism can lead to the introduction of a sustainable sports culture in Pakistan. The country can host mega national and international sports events, attracting a large number of foreign tourists. The development of sports tourism will create local employment opportunities. Since the development of sports tourism is related to and depends on various other industries, the arrival of more tourists can be a huge boost to the local economy. In lieu of his claim, sports tourism activities can also stimulate the establishment of industries that produce hardware for these sports activities. Mr Liang, through his research, suggested that Pakistan should improve its infrastructure, and security conditions, train professional talents, and formulate reasonable management policy support based upon the Chinese model.

Dr Tahir explores the role of financial risk-taking attitude in consumer satisfaction

Lahore, June 20, 2023 (PPI-OT): A consumer’s attitude of financial risk tolerance (FRT) plays an important role in his/her financial decisions, thereby determining his well-being. FRT is a consumer’s preference for the amount of risk he undertakes while making investments. Recently, a lot of research studies have been conducted on consumer well-being and FRT. Being motivated by this trend in financial research, Dr Muhammad Tahir (Assistant Professor, Lahore Business School, the University of Lahore (UOL)) and fellow researchers explored the relationship amongst financial literacy, propensity to plan (PTP), FRT, financial satisfaction, and life satisfaction.

Though scholarly acumen for consumer well-being is rapidly developing, not much is known regarding the collective roles of financial literacy, PTP, and FRT. Dr Tahir’s study addressed this gap by showing that financial literacy, risk-taking attitudes, and planning propensities are all interconnected and necessary ingredients to improve financial and life satisfaction. Dr Tahir’s analytical study titled “Role of financial risk-taking attitude in personal finances and consumer satisfaction: evidence from Australia” revealed a strong partial mediation of FRT between financial literacy and financial satisfaction. Moreover, the analysis showed that a high PTP combined with a high FRT results in high financial satisfaction.

For achieving the main objective of the research, the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey was taken into consideration. Furthermore, Dr Tahir used the variance-based partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), also known as the PLS path modelling approach, to test the proposed hypotheses of the study empirically. The findings of Dr Tahir’s research study showed the importance of creating financial plans in accordance with risk tolerance. Considering the relevance of increasing financial literacy, Dr Tahir suggested that the use of tools that could help consumers plan and spent in risky investments might lead them to have a more financial and life satisfaction.
