Pakistan’s preparations for Women’s Asia Cup to begin from Tuesday

Lahore, August 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):Twenty-five cricketers will feature in a four-day training camp in Lahore from 30 August as the national women’s side begins preparations for the ACC Women’s Asia Cup.

These 25 players include Shawal Zulfiqar and Aroob Shah who put outstanding performances in the recently concluded Women U19 T20 Tournament. Shawal led her side, Central Punjab, to the title and was the leading run-getter in the tournament, while Aroob, who has already featured for Pakistan in international cricket, led Sindh to the final and was the joint highest wicket-taker with nine scalps.

This is the first phase of the two-phased training camp and the second phase will run from 18 to 28 September at Lahore Country Club, Murdike in which the players selected for the Asia Cup will feature.

The players will undergo skills session on Tuesday at the National High Performance Centre and play T20 practice matches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the LCCA ground.

On the basis of their performances in these three practice matches, national women’s selector, Asmavia Iqbal, will finalise the side for the Asia Cup, the schedule and venue for which will be confirmed by the event organisers.

Fast bowler Fatima Sana, who is featuring in the Women’s CPL, has been provided exemption, while Tuba Hasan will join the camp on 31 August.

The invited players will report at the team hotel on 29 August.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Lahore, August 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):In a colourful and impressive ceremony held today at Nishtar Park Lahore, the Sports Board Punjab honoured the men and women of the province for their achievements in the field of sports. The Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi was the chief guest on this occasion and presented trophies and cash awards to the recipients of these prestigious awards.

The lifetime achievement award was bestowed upon Gen (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi President Athletics Federation of Pakistan for his meritorious and outstanding services rendered for the cause of Athletics in Pakistan. During his tenure as President AFP Pakistan has produced some World class athletes like Arshad Nadeem, Shajar Abbas, Sharoz Khan, Abdul Moeed Baloch and a number of other prominent athletes who gave noteworthy and record-breaking performances at the National and Asian levels. Pakistan reappeared on the Athletics Gold medal table of the Commonwealth Games after an absence of 50 years.

The Chief Minister Punjab paid rich tributes to the achievements of AFP and requested Gen Sahi to guide the Government of Punjab in the development of its future sports programs. The sensational Arshad Nadeem winner and record holder in the Javelin throw event of the Commonwealth Games Birmingham, 2022 was awarded a cash prize of Rupees Two million.

A posthumous achievement award was also presented to (late) Subedar Abdul Khaliq who created an Asian record and twice won the 100 meters’ event at the Asian Games held in 1958 and 1962. The award was received by his son Muhammad Ijaz who was also a national athlete himself.

The management and members of Athletics Federation of Pakistan wish to congratulate all the recipients of these awards and prizes. We would also like to thank the Sports Board Punjab for honouring the heroes and legends of sports in Pakistan and hope that this event will become a yearly occurrence.

IIUI President visits Flood Relief Camp 

Islamabad, August 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):Dr. Hathal Homoud Alotaibi, President, International Islamic University (IIU) visited the flood relief camp organized by the university, here at the new campus. The IIUI President said on the occasion that the recent flood situation is unprecedented and it is our responsibility to come forward. He said service of humanity is the message of Islam and same IIUI had already been disseminating, therefore, such camps be contributed at maximum level. He added that no one alone can cope with such floods and rains.

Referring to the pain of the victims, he said the entire IIUI community must come forward to help the flood victims. He said floods have caused widespread devastation, let’s get out of this ordeal and be a hand to the ones who are trying to help and rehabilitate the victims. IIU President appreciated the effort of the IIUI community and hailed the initiatives of setting up the camps in the IIUI campuses. Prof. Dr. N.B. Jumani, Vice President, Administration and Finance of the University was also present on the occasion.

Update on Shaheen Shah Afridi

Dubai, August 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Shaheen Shah Afridi has departed for London where he will complete his rehabilitation.

PCB Chief Medical Officer, Dr Najeebullah Soomro: “Shaheen Shah Afridi requires uninterrupted, dedicated knee specialist care and London offers some of the best sports medical and rehabilitation facilities in the world. In the best interest of the player, we have decided to send him there.

“The medical department will receive daily feedback on his progress whilst in London and we are confident Shaheen will return to full fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Whilst in London, Shaheen will remain under the supervision of the PCB Medical Advisory Panel, which also comprises London-based Dr Imtiaz Ahmed and Dr Zafar Iqbal. Since 2016, Dr Imtiaz has been the Head of Medical Services at the Queens Park Rangers Football Club, while Dr Zafar is Head of Sports Medicine at the Crystal Palace Football Club since 2015 (having worked previously with Tottenham Hotspur FC, Liverpool FC and Kent County Cricket Club).

Shaheen suffered a PCL injury in July whilst fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka. He is expected to regain complete fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, though his return to competitive cricket will be decided upon by the PCB Medical Advisory Panel.
