Faculty Achievement: IBA Faculty authors a book on Orientalism Post 9/11

Karachi, October 09, 2021 (PPI-OT): Dr. Faisal Nazir, Visiting Faculty, Departments of Management and Social Sciences and Liberal Arts, School of Business Studies, has authored a book titled, ‘Orientalism Post 9/11: Pakistani Anglophone Fiction in an Age of Terror’. The book is published by the Pakistan Study Centre, University of Karachi.

The book emphasizes the need to deconstruct the biased and stereotypical representations of Islam and Muslims that have been widely circulated in the media as well as in scholarly and academic discourses since 2001, noting the resurgence of orientalist discourse in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. The book explores how far and how effectively Pakistani Anglophone writers may confront and dispute stereotypical depictions.

One Day Seminar on Professional Career Development

Jamshoro, October 09, 2021 (PPI-OT): IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, Department of Electronic Engineering MUET Chapter organized a one-day seminar on Professional Career Development “Groom your Career with Innovative Talks” on 5th Oct 2021 at USPCAS-W Auditorium MUET Jamshoro. The Seminar was formally started with the recitation of the Holy Quran and Prof. Dr. Arbab Nighat Chairperson department of Electronic Engineering welcomed the worthy Vice-Chancellor, the Speakers, the Coordinators, the Organizers, and the Participants and she briefly highlighted the importance of the seminar. Worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. A. Uqaili joined the opening ceremony and delivered his speech, and he appreciated the Speakers for taking their time from their very busy schedule to motivate the participants regarding career development. He also appreciated the efforts of the Chairperson Department of Electronic Engineering, Coordinators and volunteers for organizing such a great seminar.

The first technical session was delivered by Engr. Main Abdul Manan (Electrical and Instrumentation Team Leader with Exterran Pakistan at JJVL), briefly explained that how life is being with an Engineering Profession and what things are faced by instrumentation engineers, and what startups should be taking to avoid risks in the field of instrumentation, how to manage everything with success such as large and small organizations. Participants were also advised that how they should start their career by hunting different jobs opportunities around them through the use of social media to have a successful career.

The second session was conducted by Engr. Ayaz Hussain Solangi (Project Engineering Leader, GE Middle East, and Africa). Engr. Ayaz joined online directly from UAE and shared his experience and explained skills required for students in getting jobs in leading industries in Pakistan as well as abroad. The third session was conducted by Engr. Pooja Rajput is working as Manager Security Operation Center ISD HBL Karachi, she put light on abroad term exchange opportunities and internship opportunities for undergraduate students and the skills required for the current job market.

The final session was about the benefits of joining IEEE was conducted by Dr. Parkash Lohana (Chair IEEE Region 10 Professional Activities Committee). Dr. Parkash briefly discussed the benefits of IEEE students’ membership and professional membership and funding opportunities available for students and professionals. Further, he explained the humanitarian and volunteering activities in IEEE. After the technical sessions, an interactive session was conducted by Engr. Mian Abdul Mannan, the participants were allowed to ask questions to clear their queries.

Followed by technical sessions and interactive sessions, IEEE Day 2021 was also celebrated. Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Prof. D. Arbab Nighat Chairperson Department of Electronic Engineering, Prof. Dr. Aftab Memon Meritorious Professor, Department of Telecommunication Engineering, Engr. Azam Rafique Memon, Coordinator, Engr. Bharat Lal Advisor IEEE-IMS, faculty members, and the organizing team joined the cake cutting ceremony.

The shield of appreciation and certificates were distributed to speakers, coordinators, and the organizers. Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali appreciated the efforts of the Chairperson, Department of electronic engineering, and the team of IEEE-IMS for organizing such a great event and thanked speakers for their time to provide guidance about the career and delivering the motivational sessions. The seminar ended with a vote of thanks by Engr. Bharat Lal to all Speakers, Coordinators, Organizers, and all participants.

Two-Day Training Workshop on Critical Reading and Writing concluded

Khairpur, October 09, 2021 (PPI-OT): A Two-Day Training Workshop on Critical Reading and Writing organized by the Bhittai Social Watch and Advocacy (BSWA), Khairpur, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Pakistan in collaboration with Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur and Inter-University Consortium for the Promotion of Social Sciences (IUCPSS) concluded. Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, Vice Chancellor, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur and Dr. Jochen Hippler from FES Pakistan inaugurated the workshop.

The students from members institutions of IUCPSS including Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Ripha University, Rawalpindi, Khuwaja Fareed University, Rahim Yar Khan, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Women University, Peshawar, Mir Chakar Khan Rind University, Sibbi, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology, Karachi and F.C College University, Lahore and host Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur participated in the workshop.

Speaking on this occasion, Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto said that critical reading and writing reflects one’s intellectual vision on any subject. This workshop has provided an ample opportunity to students to produce an intellectual piece of writing. Dr. Ibupoto remarked that Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur has expanded in terms of infrastructure and quality education. We not only provide students with excellent educational opportunities but also groom their personalities.

Dr. Jochen Hippler from FES remarked that the purpose of this academic activity was to engage students in research based activities and encourage them for academic writings. The Resource Persons of Training Workshop were Dr. Jochen Hippler and Dr. Fatima Kamali from Quaid-e-Azam University School of Politics and International Relations. The Concluding Ceremony of the Workshop was held. Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, Vice Chancellor presided over the ceremony while Mr. Raja Tarqiue Hussain Chandio, Deputy Commissioner, Khairpur was the chief guest. Mr. Murtaza Noor, National Coordinator IUCPSS, Dr. Jochen Hippler and Mr. Mukhtiar Malik, Renowned Poet and Broadcaster were the guests of honour.

Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto said it is matter of high pleasure and rejoice for me to welcome the galaxy of future scholars. He said I am really proud of students of Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur who authored a book Peace Now and Forever. It is a good piece of edition for Central Library as well as for the readers of the world. We are on the path of development since we have set dynamic and energetic team. Dr. Ibupoto commended the efforts of IUCPSS, BSWA, FES Pakistan and the team of the SALU for organizing this result-oriented workshop. The Vice Chancellor also appreciated the keen interest of Deputy Commissioner, Khairpur in the academic dialogue.

Mr. Raja Tarqiue Hussain Chandio said that the glimpses and the title of the book are excellent. He said I am optimistic that peace will stay forever. Sindh has accepted different cultures. This is the land of Sufi Saints so we are broad minded. Mr. Chandio appreciated the efforts of Dr. Khalil Ibupoto who is working hard day and night for the development of the University.

Dr. Jochen Hippler extended thanks to teachers who guided the students to accomplish their research publication in the advent of COVID-19. Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Murtaza Noor highlighted the importance of effective engagements of students at University campuses through promoting values of peace, tolerance and co-existence. In this regard, first ever student societies centre has been established at SALU.

Prof. Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Mashori, Dean Faculty of Arts and Languages spoke as keynote speaker. He said that the books authored by the students reflect their vision and commitment with the education and research. We are proud that our students possess potential and curiosity for the academic pursuit. Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Mr. Mureed Hussain Ibupoto, Registrar, Mr. Mukhtiar Malik, Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim Khokhar, Mr. Hassan Shaikh, Niklas Joschua Kemper FES, Pakistan, Syed Kaneez Zehra Rashdi, Mr. Abdullah Phulpoto, Mr. Muhammad Ali Lashari and Mr. Khadim Hussain Mirani also spoke on this occasion.

Mr. Abdullah Dayo, Program Manager, FES Pakistan moderated the session. Meanwhile, launching of YouTube Channel “The Campus Life in Pakistan was also held. Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto and Mr. Raja Tarqiue Hussain Chandio launched the YouTube channel. The screening of video documentary produced by the students of University was also telecasted. Certificates, Shields and Traditional Gifts were presented to the participants and guests. The ceremony was followed by Sufi Music performed by the Sufi Singers of the Sachal Sarmast Shrine. A large number of Civil Society Activists, Faculty Members and Social Activists attended the ceremony.

UCP delegation visits Pakistan Railways

Lahore, October 09, 2021 (PPI-OT): A delegation from UCP led by Mr Zubair Anwar, Head Centre for Professional Excellence and Dr Muhammad Akram Tahir, Dean Faculty of Engineering along with Dr Rizwan Shad HoD Mechanical Engineering, Dr Ali Nasir HoD Electrical Engineering, Dr Kafeel Ahmad HoD Civil Engineering and Dr Faizan Shafiq visited Pakistan Railways Head Quarters in Lahore. In addition, Pakistan Railway senior officials, including Advisor Human Resource and Capacity Building, Chief Engineer Locomotives, Joint Directors and Deputy Directors, received the UCP delegation.

Both sides discussed areas of common interest and identified short-term and long-term initiatives that can be undertaken for upskilling and capacity building of Pakistan Railways. The two organizations have agreed to move forward with several programmes that would create opportunities for participation from trainers and students from all UCP faculties.
