President LUMS Adventure Society Becomes First Pakistani Woman to Summit Gondogoro Peak

Lahore, September 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): On September 2, 2021, at 1:43 pm, Saba Haleem (BSc Economics 2022), President LUMS Adventure Society (LAS) successfully summited Gondogoro Peak in the Hushe Valley at Skardu, becoming the first woman from Pakistan to do so. Journeying alongside her were four other members of LAS, Syed Qasim Shah (BSc Economics and Politics 2022), Hamza Farooq (Bsc Economics and Politics 2022), Ahmed Qazi (BSc Computer Science 2022), and Muhammad Ateeque (BSc Economics and Politics 2022). The group also became the first-ever student-led expedition to the Peak.

The Gondogoro Peak is a technical snow-capped climbing peak of the Karakorum Range situated in the north of Hushe valley, and is surrounded by K2, the world’s second-highest peak. The Gondogoro Peak summit is well-known amongst the international mountaineering community as a tough expedition.

Exploring unchartered territories in Pakistan, however, is one of the main motives of LAS. The Society provides its members the opportunity to challenge themselves and scale new heights. This current feat required months of preparation as the LAS team spent their summer training and building up strength and stamina. For Saba, mental fitness was an equally important aspect of the preparation, if not more. “I feel these expeditions are a bigger challenge mentally. You have to tell yourself that you’re going to walk long hours and there will be difficulties along the way. Physical fitness can help you to some extent, but it’s your mind and your thinking that will actually lead you to the achievement.”

During the expedition, the team was joined by Mr. Rozi Ali, a senior mountain climber who has summited all of Pakistan’s 8000m peaks including Gasherbrum, Broadpeak and Nanga Parbat. A legend in his own right, he was also the mentor of the late Ali Sadpara.

Along with Mr. Ali, Yousuf Bhai, a high-altitude porter and Hatim bhai, the team’s guide, also accompanied the group. “They played a huge part in making the expedition a success and LAS is grateful for their efforts, support and beautiful company throughout the expedition,” expressed Saba.

The trek to the top of Gondogoro peak took the group five days. Saba shared that it was the last leg of the trek that was the most difficult. “We had to climb an 80-degree ice wall with a rope, and the rope kept slipping because of the snow and ice. It was really hard to push yourself up, but my teammates kept encouraging me. When we reached the summit all of us started crying because we finally did it after all the hard work.”

It was when Saba was on summit that she came to know she was the first woman to have achieved this milestone from Pakistan. “Even though Hatim bhai kept on saying throughout the trek that if we do this peak it’ll be a great achievement, we didn’t realise what it meant. But when he told me on the summit that I was the first Pakistani woman to do reach this peak, I was amazed.” She added that as the president of LAS, it was important for her to do this so that she could show to all the young woman who wanted to achieve something big that they could do what whatever they set their minds to.

Saba gives the LUMS Adventure Society and its members a lot of credit for providing her with the support and platform to explore her passion for adventure, in turn making an achievement like this possible. “Our society is really small and we’re a family. We keep on encouraging each other. If I wasn’t part of this dynamic community, I wouldn’t be able to achieve this. I owe it all to LAS.”

The next major goal for Saba is to climb an unclimbed peak. She also hopes that the trekking community will continue to get more attention and people like Mr. Rozi Ali, Yusuf bhai and Hatim bhai are recognised for their accomplishments. “Rozee bhai told us some stories about his life and his experiences that were so inspiring. They have all done 8000 metres, which is an amazing feat. I want this trekking community to be recognised, because they have so much talent.”

NUST transfers 2 more IPRs to the local industry taking the total to 58

Islamabad, September 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): NUST has transferred 2 more IPRs to the local industry making the total number of IPRs licensed to 58. The IPRs were transferred to Wisdom Wheel Wireless Pvt Ltd, a tenant at National Science and Technology Park (NSTP). The licensing agreement was signed at NUST H-12 campus on September 9, 2021. Dr Rizwan Riaz, Pro Rector Research Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC) and Vice President NSTP, and Mr Haider, CEO and Co-founder Wisdom Wheel Wireless Pvt Ltd, signed the licensing agreement in presence of the Dr Aamer Baqai, Dean, NUST College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME). Technology is developed by Dr Ali Hassan and Dr Farhan Riaz, faculty of NUST College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME).

The industry 4.0 Process Virtualization System allows manufacturing facilities and industrial installations to be able to effectively monitor and control certain parameters that are required in a particular process that is part of the industrial value chain. Currently, factories and industrial facilities such as oil and gas storage plants require a lot of wiring and integration of various control equipment such as PLCs and VFDs to work effectively.

The system allows industrial facilities to greatly reduce their costs as now they will be able to virtualize their control systems and will be able to integrate new protocols simply by downloading the relevant software package onto the hardware. Secondly, costs related to increasing the number of I/O ports will be greatly reduced as system scalability becomes much easier since the user does not have to add I/O cards every time they wish to connect new equipment. They can simply connect a wireless sensor node to the base device that is to be controlled.

Root and Richardson voted ICC Players of the Month for August

Dubai, September 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): England Test captain Joe Root and Ireland’s Eimear Richardson have been voted as the winners of the ICC Players of the Month for August 2021. England captain Joe Root was voted the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August 2021 for his consistent performances in the first three Tests against India which were part of the ICC World Test Championship series.

Root had scored more runs in the first three Tests than England’s next three highest run-scorers combined and had also been their highest individual scorer in each of their five innings. On the back of his stunning display in August, Root climbed to the top of MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Rankings for batters on 1 September. Placed fifth in the rankings before the start of the series, the England skipper had leapfrogged Virat Kohli, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson to the No.1 spot.

Commenting on Root’s performance in August, Pommie Mbangwa, a member of the ICC Voting Academy for the Player of the Month said: “Root made an amazing effort to score three consecutive test centuries in each of the first three tests in an engrossing and challenging series. That he has done it against a very strong Indian bowling attack adds to the feat, whilst getting back to the top of the batting rankings is the cherry on top.”

In women’s cricket, Ireland’s Eimear Richardson has had a sensational August as well, and was adjudged the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for August 2021. During the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier supported by Dream 11, Richardson won the Player of the Tournament award for her superb performance with the bat and the ball, starting off against Germany, she returned figures of 2/6, as the Irish cruised home to a comfortable 164-run victory.

She then followed it up with figures of 2/24 against Scotland. She continued her sizzling form with the ball in the remaining two matches against France and the Netherlands, returning with figures of 2/0 and 1/22 respectively, helping her team with back-to-back victories. With the bat, her most impactful knock came against Netherlands in their final match, when she scored a 49-ball 53, which helped her side reach a total of 111/9. Ireland eventually won the match by 24 runs, helping them clinch a second-place finish in the tournament. Richardson was among the highest run-scorers in the tournament, finishing fifth on the charts.

Reacting to her award Richardson said: “It was very exciting to be nominated for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for August and to now be voted as the winner is just so amazing and humbling.”

“It was great to contribute to overall team performances at the European Qualifiers and hopefully we have done enough to make the next stage and compete on a global level again.”

“Behind every athlete, and any achievement, is a volume of people and support, so a big thanks to my teammates, head coach Ed Joyce and wider management. Also, to my workplace Northern Districts, which continues to endlessly support and enable me to play at the top level. “

Ramiz Raja elected as PCB’s 36th Chairman

Lahore, September 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): Former Pakistan captain and 1992 World Cup winner, Mr Ramiz Raja, was elected unanimously and unopposed as the Pakistan Cricket Board’s 36th Chairman for a three-year term in a Special Meeting presided over by the PCB Election Commissioner, Mr Justice (retd) Sheikh Azmat Saeed.

Mr Ramiz Raja, along with Mr Asad Ali Khan, was nominated by the PCB Patron, Prime Minister Imran Khan, on the PCB Board of Governors on 27 August for a three-year term, where they joined Mr Aasim Wajid Jawad, Ms Alia Zafar, Mr Arif Saeed, Mr Javed Kurieshi (all independent members) and Mr Wasim Khan (PCB Chief Executive).

Mr Ramiz Raja is Pakistan’s 18th Test and 12th ODI captain, and played 255 international matches in which he scored 8,674 runs in the period from 1984 to 1997. He has previously served the PCB as its Chief Executive from 2003-2004, has represented Pakistan on the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee and presently sits on the MCC World Cricket Committee. He has been a successful broadcaster with world’s leading cricket networks and widely regarded as the voice of Pakistan cricket.

Mr Ramiz Raja is only the fourth former Pakistan international cricketer to head the PCB after Mr Abdul Hafeez Kardar (1972-1977), Mr Javed Burki (1994-1995) and Mr Ijaz Butt (2008-2011).

Addressing the BoG following his election, Mr Ramiz Raja said: “I am thankful to all of you for electing me as the PCB Chairman and look forward to working with you to ensure Pakistan cricket continues to thrive and grow stronger, both on and off-the-field.

“One of my key focuses will be to help introduce in the Pakistan men’s cricket team the same culture, mind-set, attitude and approach that once made Pakistan one of the most feared cricket playing nations. As an organisation, we all need to get behind the national team and provide them the desired assistance and support so that they can produce that brand of cricket, which the fans also expect from them each time they step on to the field of play.

“Obviously, as a former cricketer, my other priority will be to look into the welfare of our past and present cricketers. The game has and will always be about the cricketers and, as such, they deserve more recognition and respect from their parent institution.”

Mr Ramiz Raja will hold a media conference at 1415 Pakistan time in the Bob Woolmer Indoor School, National High Performance Centre and live-stream of this session will be available across all PCB social media platforms.
