Karachi, During the prize distribution ceremony of the Khan Surshim Karachi Region Senior Inter-District Cricket Tournament, Syed Mustafa Kamal, Member of National Assembly and former city nazim, expressed concern over the state of cricket infrastructure in Karachi. He lamented the lack of development in grounds since his tenure and vowed to push for the improvement of cricket facilities across the city.
According to Regional Cricket Association Karachi, Kamal reminisced about the initiatives taken during his tenure, highlighting the construction and upgrading of cricket grounds equipped with floodlights. He emphasized the need for continued support for Karachi’s cricket community, urging elected representatives to advocate for the welfare of local players.
Kamal recalled the significant financial incentives provided during his tenure for cricket tournaments, including a notable prize money allocation of Rs 1 crore for the winning team and Rs 50 lakh for the runner-up. He also mentioned past international tournaments held in Karachi, underscoring the need to reclaim grounds currently occupied by others for the benefit of local cricket clubs.
Tabish Javed, Senior Vice President of RCA, echoed Kamal’s sentiments, expressing disappointment over the current state of cricket facilities, particularly the occupation of PC BK grounds and the financial burden faced in organizing matches. Khalid Nafees, Chairman of the Tournament Committee, commended the efforts to promote cricket in Karachi under the leadership of Nadeem Umar, acknowledging the success of Karachi teams in national tournaments.
During the ceremony, awards were presented to the winners and outstanding performers of the tournament, with Zone 6 Green emerging victorious by defeating Zone 6 Blues in the final. Notable attendees included Test cricketers Khurram Manzoor and Tauseef Ahmed, as well as local dignitaries and officials.
