SMI’s 137th Foundation Day celebrated 

Karachi, September 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):Sindh Mad­ressatul Islam University celebrated its 137th Foundation Day on Wednesday (September 01) at its main campus. Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Law and Administrator Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Barrister Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui was the chief guest of the event.

Highlighting the importance of SMIU he said this institution has played a vital role in the movement of independence of Pakistan. He said that university’s structure was amazing. In the university’s premises, I.I. Chundrigar Road and Aiwan-i-Tijarat Road will be renovated very soon. “SMIU is providing education and producing leaders for 137 years,” added Mr Siddiqui.

SMIU’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon said that Hassanally Effendi, the founder of SMI, transformed the youth with his vision of serving education. When Mr Effendi met Sir Syed Ahmad Khan he was told to think about the university instead of a school. Today that dream has come true and SMI became a university, he said.

He further said that this institute created so many leaders in almost every walk of life. He added that due to financial constraints we are moving slowly and the government must look into it. Secretary Universities and Boards Dr. Mansoor Abbas Rizvi also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the historical value of the SMI. University students presented tableaus and songs on the foundation day. The guests were presented shields by Prof. Memon.

Strategic Talks on Innovation and Commercialisation 2021 

Islamabad, September 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):The first series of STICKS – Strategic Talks on Innovation and Commercialisation for Knowledge Sharing – Fall 2021, was held at NUST on September 17, 2021. The theme and objectives of the event were to discuss and highlight grey areas vis-à-vis interrelation between academia and industry, innovation, commercialisation and entrepreneurship, and thereby devise strategies to address them. NUST invited top industry experts and executives from an array of fields to help facilitate this process by sharing their knowledge and experience and, in so doing, inspire researchers and students to better align their contributions with market trends and expectations.

The event entailed three panel sessions focusing on enhancing commercialisation of research projects and technologies, bridging the gap between industry and academia, and inculcating the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among students. Amongst the panellists from NUST were Dr Rizwan Riaz, Pro-Rector Research, Innovation and Commercialisation; Dr Osman Hassan, Pro-Rector Academics; and Mr Rao Sabir Ali Khan, Chief of Finance and Business Development, while from industry the panellists included Mr Irfan Wahab Khan, CEO Telenor Pakistan; Mr Faisal Shuja Khan, CEO Ovex Technologies Pakistan Pvt Ltd; Mr Adnan Zafar, Deputy CTO Huawei; Mr Ammar Hussain Jaffri, Chairman Industry Revolution Academy Pakistan; Mr Khalid Khan, Chairman, Central Asian Cellular Forum; Dr Ayeesha Mujeeb, Scientific Advisor and Shareholder Manchester BIOGEL; Mr Mohsin M Syed, Chairman Hybrid Technics Pvt Ltd; Mr Imtiaz Rastgar, Managing Director, Rastgar Group; and Mr Mohammad Imran, CEO Green Homes Developers.

In his address, Dr Rizwan Riaz extended his compliments to the guests from academia and industry and assured industry of NUST’s complete support and continued interaction in order to achieve the objectives of this initiative. He also made special mention of the research showcase in Karachi, being organised by NUST in the last week of September 2021, with the aim to forge meaningful industry partnerships.

IoBM student teams earn top spots at Insurtech Challenge 21 

Karachi, September 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):Seven student teams from across Pakistan entered the final round of the Insurtech Challenge 21 held by TPL Insurance. Among them, five student teams were from IoBM; the other two were from IBA and Habib University. We are proud to announce that two teams from IoBM have become the winner and the second runner-up of this competition.

Team Med-surance (Areeba Javed and Neelofar Gul) were the winners while the second runner-up were Team Phoenix (Gohar Irfan, Laiba Nishat, Nida Fatima). TPL invited business plans from students (first-year graduate; second and third-year undergraduate). The other three teams from IoBM were: Team Maximizers (Zaryam Anjum and Farzan Zahid); Team ES (Esha Sachdev and Sohasi Kamnani), and Team Hustlers (Khushi Ashok Kumar and Komal Sakhija).

The participants were asked how to evolve the Insurtech ecosystem of Pakistan in a nationwide contest. IoBM’s Team Med-surance and Team Phoenix emerged victorious by presenting a practical plan using their insights and learning gained while studying at IoBM.

TPL Insurance National Business Competition was a rigorous 3-week long competition, consisting of three rounds. Each round comprised of a mix of marketing, finance, supply chain, distribution channels, product management, and market research about the insurance market. During the final round, the teams had to develop a product for Generation-Z.

Team Med-surance’s idea was about students’ travel insurance. Team Phoenix presented an idea for Laptop Insurance. Both ideas were backed with a complex financial plan, detailed marketing mix, targeting Gen Z in various segments with a complete plan of marketing, financing, management, distribution, among others.

The winning team will receive a cash prize of up to 100,000 PKR. The 2nd runner-up will receive 25,000 PKR. IoBM is proud of its students who diligently pursue extracurricular activities including such events as this competition. Students follow the concepts learned through classroom lectures combined with their insights gained through experiential learning activities that are a part and parcel of their academic journey at IoBM.

The University of Faisalabad organizes one day workshop on “Leprosy Management” 

Faisalabad, September 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):Leprosy is one of the infectious skin diseases which cause serious complications in its patients. For the effective management of leprosy, the Department of Dermatology at The University of Faisalabad organized one day workshop on “Leprosy Management” in collaboration with Aid to Leprosy patients Pakistan and World Health Organization for postgraduate trainees and doctors.

Director Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital and winner of the “German Order of Merit” award, Dr Chris Schmotzer facilitated a comprehensive workshop, starting from clinical features of leprosy to management and case demonstration. It equipped all the postgraduate doctors and other attendees with recent and useful updates to timely diagnose and manage leprosy. The session was concluded by the Head of Dermatology Department, Prof Dr Tanzeela Khalid. She thanked Dr Chris for her efforts and presented the University memento to her.

IBA Karachi launches book on ‘The State of Pakistan’s Economy: During the Pandemic and Beyond 2021-22’

Karachi, September 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Faculty members of the Department of Economics, School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS), and the Center of Business and Economics Research (CBER) at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi launched a book titled, The State of Pakistan’s Economy: During the Pandemic and Beyond 2021-22. Following its tradition of the last two years, the faculty of the Department of Economics analyzed the state of Pakistan’s economy in the backdrop of the federal budget 2021-22. The analyses culminated into a book which was launched at the IBA Karachi, Main Campus. Attendees included members from the academia, media, corporate sector, the IBA faculty, students and alumni.

The book was launched through a panel discussion featuring Dr. Mubarik Ahmed, Technical Specialist in Agricultural Policies; Dr. Waqar Masood Khan, former Advisor to the Prime Minister on Revenue; and Professor Dr. Samina Khalil, Director, Applied Economics Research Centre, University of Karachi. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi and Dr. Asma Hyder, Dean, School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS).

Dr. Zaidi welcomed the panellists and the guests and introduced the contents of the book. On the fiscal space he added that FBR met its targets due to devaluation of rupee and duties on import. The co-moderator of the session, Dr. Hyder, shed light on the thought process behind the book by sharing that it was Dr. Zaidi’s idea that the faculty of Economics Department should come forward in facilitating the government and policymakers for providing scholarly input on economic issues.

Dr. Waqar congratulated IBA’s faculty on publishing the book which has insightful chapters. He further mentioned that people will await the publication if IBA publishes it periodically and in a timely manner. The analyses presented in the book cover a broad range of aspects of Pakistan’s macroeconomic policy. It presents the future landscape of the economy. It provides an assessment of the budget performance in 2020-21 and analyzes the outlook of fiscal policy for 2021-22. It discusses the State Bank of Pakistan’s response to various demand and supply-side shocks during the last two decades.

Dr. Ahmed shared with the audience that the book rightly highlights that Pakistan’s agricultural policies are in a primitive stage of development. The book focuses on the prospects of regaining the trade competitiveness in the post-Covid-19 scenario and growth and trade prospects in view of the Business Confidence Index. It analyzes the sectoral issues related to construction, energy, and agriculture, respectively and the effects of Covid-19 on the labour market. It covers the state of education during the pandemic, the youth bulge, and opportunities.

Lastly, it provides a snapshot of social protection in Pakistan in the wake of the pandemic. Dr. Khalil underscored the need to include environmental and health economics in economic discussions. The purpose of this publication is to provide scholarly input to various stakeholders, including but not limited to, policymakers, development practitioners, researchers, and the business community.
