World Maritime Day Celebrations

Islamabad, September 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):The World Maritime Day (WMD) was first celebrated in 1978 to mark the 20th anniversary of the IMO Convention’s entry into force. Since 2005 onwards, the event is also hosted by the member states in the last week of September. Celebrations are held throughout the world to draw attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment.

The WMD-21 Theme “SEAFARERS: at the core of shipping future” recognizes the hardship faced by the seafarers during the Covid-19 pandemic. The professionalism and dedication of the two million seafarers who serve on the world’s merchant fleet, is being marked this year.

Besides shipping and ports, the maritime industry has many extensive domains, such as, energy and renewable energy sector, fisheries, maritime transportation, tourism, climate change and waste management. The maritime sector is considered as main financial pillars and its sustainable development would boost the ‘Blue Economy’ in the country. The services of Maritime expert, engaged in these sectors of Blue Economy also need to be highlighted and merit recognition.

Pakistan is a member of International Maritime Organization (IMO). IMO and its member states are celebrating Maritime Day on 30th September 2021.
