MoU signed between IUB and WWFย 

Bahawalpur, September 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):A memorandum of understanding was signed between Islamia University of Bahawalpur and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Pakistan to promote research activities and joint ventures. Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar, Pro Vice Chancellor, Islamia University of Bahawalpur and Hammad Naqi Khan, Chief Executive Officer, World Wildlife Fund for Nature signed the agreement.

The two institutes will conduct training programs and workshops to enhance the capacity of the personnel, especially faculty members and researchers. Joint research projects will be formulated and environmental awareness will be created among students and the general public.

Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Bandisha and Director Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies Prof. Dr. Tanveer Hussain Turabi were present on the occasion. It is noteworthy that the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, which is active in 100 countries around the world, has been working with public and private institutions in Pakistan since 1970 for the efficient use of the environment and natural resources.

On the other hand, Islamia University Bahawalpur Cholistan Institute of Desert Studies is working for the protection and survival of natural life, plants and animals in the desert. Biologists, forestry, water resources, agriculture, social workers and environmental activists from the two institutes will jointly carry out research activities.

UE organized an orientation session for โ€œNational Freelance Training Program Batch-IIโ€ย 

Lahore, September 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):University of Education, Lahore, Directorate of Student Counselling Center organized an orientation session for โ€œNational Freelance Training Program Batch-IIโ€ in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom and Punjab Information Technology Board at Township Campus on September 1, 2021.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Education, Lahore Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha (S.I.) presided over the session while experts from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom and Punjab Information Technology Board also participated in the introductory program and made the students aware of the importance and usefulness of the โ€œNational Freelance Training Programโ€.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha (S.I.) said that projects like โ€œNational Freelance Training Programโ€ are of utmost important in the age of modern technology, with the help of such programs we cannot prepare our young generation to face the challenges of the world but also provide them decent jobs. The main objective of the program is to provide training to the youth in various fields for online employment, for which they will have the services of the best experts and today’s program is a link in the same chain.

I hope that all our young people, especially university students, will take a special interest in this program and receive a heartfelt training. The Vice Chancellor commended Director, Students Counselling Center Dr. Ahsan Bashir and his team for organizing such a tremendous program. At the end of the program, Director, Students Counselling Center, Dr. Ahsan Bashir thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha (S.I.), experts and students.

ORIC Holds One Month Long Workshop on Amazon Web Services

Islamabad, September 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a broad set of global cloud-based products including Compute, Storage, Databases, Analytics, Networking, Mobile, Developer Tools, Management Tools, IoT, Security, and Enterprise applications. From Data Warehousing to Deployment Tools, Directories to Content Delivery, over 175 AWS services are available.

Considering the significance of Amazon computing services in todayโ€™s digital world, Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) organized One Month, Hands-on Course on โ€œAmazon Web Services (AWS)โ€ starting from 09th August 2021.

The certificate distribution ceremony was held on 31st August 2021. The objective of the course was to provide students with essential AWS skills to upscale their job chances both in national and international market, help in preparation of fundamental AWS Certification and enable them to work as freelancer.

The concluding ceremony was graced by Dr. Yasir Awais Butt, Associate Professor, NUTECH, Islamabad and Dean Research and Innovation, Prof. Aamer Iqbal Bhatti. After a welcome note and motivational words by Dean Research and Innovation, Dr. Yasir Awais was requested to distribute certificates among successful candidates.

The ceremony concluded with acknowledging remarks and significance of AWS/Cloud Computing and relevant certifications by chief guest. He also appreciated and endorsed the efforts of ORIC for initiating a series of courses related to Amazon services.

Late Syed Dilawar Abbasโ€™s Family Makes Major Donation to LUMSย 

Lahore, September 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):To honour the valuable contributions of the late Syed Dilawar Abbas towards Pakistan, his sisters, Mrs. Ather Wajid Ali and Mrs. Nuzhat Wajid Ali have made a major donation to LUMS. This gift will be utilised to establish a National Outreach Programme Endowment Fund as well as promote the sport of tennis by naming the tennis facilities at LUMS in his memory.

In his distinguished career, Mr. Syed Dilawar Abbas served as a Senator and the Chairman Senate Committee Petroleum and Natural Resources; Minister of Irrigation and Power; Chairman Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd. and Group Chief of Attock Oil.

He was passionate about tennis, having served twice as the President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation, Vice President of the Asian Tennis Federation and member of the Constitutional Committee of the International Tennis Federation. Pakistanโ€™s national tennis centre, The S. Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex is named in his honour.

To commemorate the gift, an event was held on September 1, 2021, at LUMS, starting with a plaque unveiling ceremony at the tennis courts. It was attended by the sisters, friends and family members of late Syed Dilawar Abbas. Also present at the occasion, representing LUMS, were Syed Babar Ali, Founding Pro-Chancellor; Mr. Shahid Hussain, Rector; Dr. Pervez Hassan, Member Management Committee; Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor; Ms. Nuzhat Kamran, Director Office of Advancement; Mr. Almaee Hassan Jaffri, National Management Fund representative and the Development team.

โ€œI cannot thank the family of Syed Dilawar Abbas enough for being so generous โ€“ especially Ms. Nuzhat Wajid Ali and Ms. Ather Wajid Ali for taking the initiative,โ€ said Syed Babar Ali. โ€œIt was their wish that the tennis courts be named after him and I hope his name will live long after we are gone.โ€

Proceeds from the donation will endow a lifelong scholarship for the LUMS National Outreach Programme (NOP), which recently won the global CASE Platinum Award for Best Practices in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Over 850 scholars have been funded through this programme that provides full tuition waivers and additional living stipends and allowances to students from disadvantaged backgrounds to study at LUMS.

Dr. Pervez Hassan reminisced the times he spent with Syed Dilawar Abbas. He said, โ€œI was very privileged to be friends with him and our friendship blossomed through our professional experiences. He was a person driven by merit, had integrity and was respected amongst his peers and he had a strong passion to give back to society. On behalf of LUMS, I would like to thank the family for their generous contribution.โ€

Adding to the tributes, Mr. Shahid Hussain said, โ€œI have met Mr. Abbas a few times because of tennis; his services to the Pakistan tennis network have been remarkable. There is no better way to remember his lifeโ€™s work other than naming the courts after him. We hope that the tennis courts continue to flourish and so does his name.โ€

โ€œThis scholarship is very meaningful to us, and LUMS is extremely grateful. Through this scholarship, we benefit from the experiences and hard work of meritorious scholars from different areas of Pakistan, who come and contribute directly to the diversity of our campus. We are here to not only give our thanks but to remember someone who we can consider as a role model,โ€ said Dr. Arshad Ahmad.

Towards the end, Syed Dilawar Abbasโ€™s nephews, Mr. Ali Murtaza and Dr. Ali Abbas thanked the LUMS management for acknowledging their gift through this ceremony. Mr. Murtaza said, โ€œI would like to express my gratitude to LUMS Board members, Babar Sahab, Dr. Parvez Hassan and the LUMS management for honouring my uncleโ€™s memory.

โ€œDonating towards the LUMS Scholarship is a great way to remember Syed Dilawar Abbas as he was completely selfless and was always looking for ways to give back to society. Tennis was his one true love and there is no better way to remember him than to name the LUMS Tennis Courts after him.โ€

Dr. Abbas, adding to the tributes said, โ€œAs a LUMS Alumnus myself and a nephew of Syed Dilawar Abbas, it is an honour for me to be here and celebrate his memory. Tennis, LUMS and Syed Dilawar Abbas embody values that we should respect and abide by, which are the rule of law and merit.โ€

Public Defense of PhD Computer Science Thesis: Ms. Hajra Waheed (PHDCS17005)ย 

Lahore, September 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):Ms. Hajra Waheed (PHDCS17005), from the Department of Computer Science, at the Information Technology University of the Punjab, is set to defend her thesis. The public Ph.D. defense will be held at LT-1, 6th Floor, Information Technology University (ITU) of the Punjab, Arfa Software Technology Park, 346-B, Ferozepur Road, Lahore on Thursday, September 16, 2021, from 10 am to 11:30 am.

The title of Hajraโ€™s Ph.D. thesis is โ€œUsing Deep Learning in the Early Prediction of At-Risk Learners in Self-Paced Online Educationโ€. Her thesis supervisor is Dr. Saeed Ul Hassan, Chairperson, and Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science (ITU) and co-supervised by Dr. Naif Radi Aljohani (King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia).

For smooth entry into Information Technology University (ITU) of the Punjab, Arfa Software Technology Park, Lahore, prior registration is required to attend the public PhD defense. Registrations will be closed on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 1:00 PM.
