Haris Sohail injury update

Lahore, July 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):Middle-order batsman Haris Sohail is still feeling slight pain in his right leg and, as such, he will not take part in next two practice sessions scheduled on 5 and 6 July in Derby. Haris had also missed the intra-squad practice matches due to the same injury last week.

The left-handed batsman has already started his rehabilitation and will undergo an MRI scan on 6 July in Cardiff, following which decision on his availability for the 8 July ODI against England will be made. The three-match ODI series between Pakistan and England which is also part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League will commence from Cardiff on 8 July. Pakistan team is scheduled to travel to Cardiff on 6 July.

Test players’ camp in Karachi from Wednesday

Lahore, July 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):West Indies-bound Pakistan national team’s Test players will attend a 10-day training and conditioning camp under bio-secure protocols at the National Stadium in Karachi from Wednesday, 7 July. The camp will conclude on 17 July, while the players will enter the bio-secure in a Lahore hotel on 21 July before departing for Barbados on 26 July.

The camp will be supervised by National High Performance Centre coaches, headed by Saqlain Mushtaq (head of player development), and also include Mohammad Yousuf (batting coach), Mushtaq Ahmed (spin bowling coach), Umar Rashid (coach), Atiq-uz-Zaman (fielding coach), Imtiaz Ahmed (physiotherapist), Saboor Ahmed (strength and conditioning coach) and Imran Sultan (masseur).

In addition to the 11 Test players, including Abid Ali, Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Imran Butt, Mohammad Abbas, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Sajid Khan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Yasir Shah and Zahid Mahmood, the selectors have also invited six additional players. They are: Akif Javed, Irfanullah Shah, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Hassan, Mohammad Umar and Saifullah Bangash.

The 25 players and player support personnel, along with five essential staff, on Sunday underwent Covid-19 testing and all have returned negative. As such, 30-member contingent will assemble in Karachi on Tuesday where they will undergo second testing before the camp resumes on Wednesday.

17 members signal interest as ICC embark on identifying hosts for future ICC men’s events

Dubai, July 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):Following the expansion to its event programme in the next cycle, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has commenced the process to identify the hosts for men’s white-ball events to be held post 2023. The hosting of the ICC World Test Championship Final, the ICC women’s and under-19 events in the new cycle will be determined in a separate process that will get underway later this year.

Eight men’s ODI and T20 events, comprising two ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups, four ICC Men’s T20 World Cups and two ICC Champions Trophies, will be staged from 2024-2031 and ICC Members were invited to submit a preliminary technical proposal as a potential host. This included individual country submissions as well as joint proposals. Initial submissions have been received from Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Namibia, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, UAE, USA and Zimbabwe.

ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said: “We are delighted with the response from our Members to hosting ICC men’s white-ball events post 2023. This process gives us an opportunity to extend our range of hosts and grow interest in cricket worldwide reaching more fans whilst creating a long-term legacy for the sport.

“Cricket has more than a billion fans around the world and ICC events have a proven track record of bringing significant economic and social benefits for host counties. These events provide hosts with a wonderful opportunity to work closely with local communities to grow the game whilst supporting economic and social development public policy goals. “We will now move forward to the second phase of the process where Members will provide a more detailed proposal before the ICC Board takes decisions on our future hosts later this year.”

Department of Mathematics Holds Workshop on Mathematical Introduction to Reinforcement Learning

Lahore, July 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):A workshop on ‘Mathematical Introduction to Reinforcement Learning’ was organised by the Department of Mathematics, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), from June 9-11, 2021. The speakers at the workshop were Dr. Andreas Daniel Matt, IMAGINARY, Berlin and Dr. Jonathan Shock, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

The workshop was attended by national and international students, researchers and professionals. The work used theory mixed with simulators and interactive applets to introduce Reinforcement Learning (RL) to every participant so they could relate RL to their own context. The discussion and ideas stemmed from various exciting areas of applications such as the use of RL in automating investment portfolios, flight/boat navigation, logistics and transport routing, etc. The event was a first of its kind to open an interactive floor for people to meet and talk about RL, and the future of RL.

Selected participants of the workshop will be working closely with faculty members at the Department of Mathematics at SBASSE. The event has paved a way for mathematicians to work with engineers, programmers, and skilled professionals. The event highlighted the need of incorporating Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning into the future activities of Pakistan, especially in the teaching, research, business, and IT sectors.

Punjab University EERDC Director discusses various international policies

Lahore, July 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):Dr Syed Sheraz Dawood an Associate Professor at the Institute of Energy and Environmental Engineering (IEEE) and Director of the Energy Engineering Research and Development Centre (EERDC) discussed the significance of Integrated Regional and Cross Borders Power Trades amongst developing nations at the 11th session of the Contemporary Dynamics of Pakistan on Monday 14th June 2021.

The potential role of the newly established EERDC in conjunction with an extensive discussion on Pakistan’s various Research Collaborations in the Energy Sector with regional and international partners was also covered. This lecture titled ‘Pakistan Regional and International Energy Sector Collaborations’ was widely attended by various diplomats stationed across Pakistan. This specific activity was organized by the Regional Integration Centre, University of the Punjab and Centre for Global and Strategic Studies, Islamabad.

38% say that they are satisfied with the current situation in Pakistan however 53% say that they are not: Gallup and Gilani Pakistan

Islamabad, July 05, 2021 (PPI-OT): According to a survey conducted by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, 53% of Pakistanis are not satisfied with the current situation in Pakistan.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the four provinces was asked the following question, “By keeping in mind the current situation of Pakistan, please tell us that how satisfied or unsatisfied you are with the current situation of Pakistan?” In response to this question, 16% said ‘very satisfied’, 22% said ‘somewhat satisfied’ while 16% said “somewhat unsatisfied”, 37% said “very unsatisfied”, 7% did not know and 3% did not respond.

Question: “By keeping in mind the current situation of Pakistan, please tell us that how satisfied or unsatisfied you are with the current situation of Pakistan?”
