Early Muslim historians acknowledged the Quran as a source of history, NIHCR Webinar on Weakends on Discourse of History

Islamabad, July 25, 2021 (PPI-OT):“During early period of Islam, Muslim historians were primarily influenced by the Quran in their historiography,” observed renowned historian Prof Dr Aslam Syed on Saturday while responding to a question on contribution of Muslims in historiography during early period of Islam.

“The Quran contains records that constitute the basis of history of humankind from Adam through the last Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Another valuable resource for Islamic historians is the Hadith (the traditions or sayings of Muhammad (PBUH), which is arranged in such a way that lines of transmission can be traced back to those who knew the Prophet. Chains of authorities were introduced thus as integral ingredients to early Islamic theology and historiography,” he said while replying a question during a Webinar on the “Weakends of Discourse in History on every weekend” here.

Prof Dr. Aslam Syed has been currently serving Center for Religious Studies, Ruhr Universitat, Bochum, Germany. He remained Chairman, Department of History, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad and served the NIHCR as its Director. Elaborating his response to the question on early Muslim historians’ contribution to historiography, Dr Syed recalled the role of Al-Ṭabari, Rashid al-Din and Ibn Khaldun in the Muslim historiography.

“The greatest early Muslim historian, al-Ṭabari was reputed to have memorized the Quran; produced a 30,000-page commentary on the Quran and an equally long universal history. His chief virtues as a historian were his accurate chronology and his scrupulous faithfulness in the reproducing authorities. The Persian scholar Rashid al-Din composed a more truly universal history, Jami al-Tawarikh (Collector of Chronicles), which covered not only the Islamic world but also included data on the popes and emperors of Europe and on Mongolia and China. The sophistication of Islamic historical thought was dramatically illustrated by the Muqaddimah (Introduction) of the Arab historian Ibn Khaldun. This introductory volume of a universal history reveals Khaldun’s ideas about history – something chroniclers hardly ever did,” Dr Syed said.

This was the fifth session of the Webinar exclusively dedicated to early period of the Muslim history. The Webinar was arranged by the National Institute of Historical and Cultural Research, Centre of Excellence, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad which was online attended by over 1300 participants ranging from students, teachers and researchers to have greater insights into the valuable views of the guest speaker.

Responding to a question on introduction of new trends by Muslim historians in historiography during early period of Islam, Dr Syed opined that there were no fixed and specific methods that were followed regarding the preservation and compilation of the historical events. Rather it was preserved through oral traditions and odyssey. “This system helps preserve religious rules and regulations, restrictions and others social rules. But it is not sufficient or enough to establish a permanent system of the preservation of all historical data and events,” he said.

The NIHCR Director Dr Sajid Mahood Awan moderated the Webinar by introducing the participants and presenting their questions to Dr Syed for answering. He said that this inclusive activity would be taken up every week for the benefit of students in general and capacity-building of the teachers and researchers in particular.
