Lahore: In a move aligned with the Federal Government's directives, Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) has initiated efforts to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies into university curricula and degree programs. According to University of Engineering and Technology, a high-level interactive meeting was convened at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, gathering vice chancellors from over 80 public and private universities across Punjab. The session was chaired by HEC Chairman Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar and hosted by UET Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir.
The meeting aimed to address the transformation of higher education, focusing on curriculum reforms, digital learning, and innovation to develop a workforce prepared for future challenges. Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar highlighted the urgent need for universities to move beyond traditional teaching models and adopt technology-driven education. He emphasized the importance of redesigning curricula and academic systems to equip graduates with practical knowledge and digital competencies, aligning with both national and international requirements.
HEC Chairman Akhtar stressed the necessity of incorporating AI, Data Science, Robotics, Cybersecurity, Biotechnology, and Digital Technologies into academic programs. This initiative is intended to ensure that graduates are equipped with skills demanded by the rapidly evolving global job market.
UET Lahore's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shahid Munir, elaborated on the university's efforts in promoting AI and digital technologies. He announced UET Lahore's readiness to share its AI curriculum and teaching resources with other institutions, facilitating nationwide curriculum modernization. The collaborative approach aims to enhance Pakistan's capacity in AI and emerging technologies, improving the quality and competitiveness of higher education.
During the session, vice chancellors exchanged views on integrating AI into various academic and administrative domains. They discussed the challenges faced by universities and provided recommendations to HEC. The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session, a commemorative shield presentation, and a group photograph. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the Federal Government's vision and HEC's policy, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration, research strengthening, and producing graduates capable of meeting future challenges.
