Joint Committee Statement on PMDA

Karachi, August 18, 2021 (PPI-OT):The joint committee of media organizations comprising All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) have unanimously rejected Govt. efforts to establish PMDA.

The recently circulated Minutes of the meeting between Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and these organizations are misleading and have been purposefully distorted to give the impression that there was no serious objection to PMDA.

All representatives were unanimous in rejecting The PMDA draft. The ministry is continuously trying to give the impression that sections of the media fraternity are supporting the ministry on this draconian attempt to muzzle the press. This should be stopped immediately.

The joint committee is planning to call all human rights groups, bar associations, members of parliament and other sections of civil society to join hands in stopping this outrageous move by the present Govt. to put further curbs on media.

Media Authority bill will be completely resisted in and outside the Parliament: Senator Irfan Siddiqui

Karachi, August 13, 2021 (PPI-OT):“Media Authority bill will be completely resisted in and outside the Parliament” Senator Irfan Siddiqui. This is a bill for media destruction and is an regrettable and ill intended effort because for Electronic Media an agreed Code of Ethics already existed whereas codes for Print and Social Media are also operative. The reservations of Electronic and Print Media must be given due consideration.

Islamabad “The member of Senate Standing Committee for Information and Broadcasting and Chairman Senate Standing Committee for Education, Senator Mr. Irfan Siddiqui has strongly criticized the proposal of the Government to establish Print Media Development Authority. He stated that this proposal is an attempt to subjugate freedom of expression and terrorize the media already under pressure.

The senior Journalist, elected senator on the ticket of Muslim League (N) and member of upper house Mr. Irfan Siddiqui has expressed his concern in a press statement that the Government has yesterday (Wednesday August 11, 2021) convened a joint meeting of standing committees of Senate and National Assembly at Pak China Friendship Centre outside the parliament premises without consulting any opposition party. The intimation of the meeting was communicated few hours before the meeting informing that the concerned minister will brief the joint meeting on Pakistan Media Development Authority.

The Muslim League (N) and Peoples Party objected to the venue of the meeting and boycotted it. Senator Irfan Siddiqui has said that the opposition would vehemently oppose any effort to curtail press freedom and fully resist the Pakistan Media Development Authority in and outside the parliament as the proposed authority is not being formed for media development but for media destruction.

Mr. Irfan Siddiqui said that during the tenure of PML (N) a committee was formed under his Chairmanship to prepare a Code of Ethics for Electronic Media. It is pride for him that the existing Code of Ethics was prepared by the Committee for which the Pakistan Broadcasters Association fully cooperated. Every word of the code was unanimously agreed and enforced on the order of the Supreme Court. If there was any issue in its implementation it can be improved.

Likewise the Press Council for Print Media can be activated whereas the Laws on Social Media are also operative. In this situation, establishment of a new authority would further subjugate the media which cannot be taken as a good intention. Senator Irfan Siddiqui further said that the reservations of PBA, PFUJ, APNS, CPNE and other organizations should not be ignored. He stated that the Muslim League (N) with other opposition parties will put its best efforts to forestall the arbitrary legislation.

Representatives of media organizations rejects proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority

Karachi, August 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The representatives of media organizations i.e. All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) in a joint statement, have totally rejected the proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) and termed the concept as an unconstitutional and draconian law against the freedom of press and expression and step toward imposing the state control to regulate all segments of media under over-centralized body.

The representatives of the media organizations in a joint statement, vehemently objected to the proposed PMDA as it appears to be aimed at to subjugate the freedom of press and expression. The major stakeholders believe that the PMDA is an attempt to tighten Federal Government control over the media from one platform and ignores the fact that print, electronic and social media are separate entities each with their own defined features. The move to bring under state control smacks of an authoritarian streak that should have no place in democratically elected dispensation. The representatives of media organizations have urged upon the joint meeting of the Senate and National Assembly on Information to reject the Proposal completely.
