Lahore, Dr. Tahir Mehmood, an Associate Professor at the Center for Applied Molecular Biology (CAMB) at the University of the Punjab (PU), has successfully completed a significant research project, funded by the Pakistan-Netherland Dairy Development Centre, with a budget of PKR 18 million. The project focused on evaluating the nutritional value of loose milk samples collected from 11 major cities across Pakistan.
According to University of The Punjab, Dr. Mehmood’s work as a biochemist and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) of the project played a crucial role in conducting a nationwide survey to assess milk quality and safety in both winter and summer seasons. The findings revealed that most of the loose milk samples were non-compliant with regulatory standards. These results were shared during a closing ceremony at Avari Hotel, Lahore, on October 24, 2023.
The event, which attracted significant media attention and coverage on national channels, was attended by various dignitaries, including the Vice Chancellors of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) and Education University, Lahore, and the president of the Pakistan Medical Association, Lahore. They collectively acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the research team, particularly emphasizing the collaborative efforts of scientists from different universities, including Dr. Mehmood.
The contributions of the Co-PIs were recognized by UVAS, which presented souvenirs to them as a token of appreciation for their valuable contributions to the project. The research findings are critical for the dairy industry in Pakistan, providing insights into the quality and safety of milk being supplied in major cities.
The accomplishment of this project and the dissemination of its results mark an important milestone in dairy research in Pakistan. The CAMB community at PU expressed their heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Tahir Mehmood for his achievement, highlighting the significance of this research in the field of food safety and nutrition.
