Islamabad,Senator Taj Haider, the in-charge of the Central Election Cell of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has penned a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner highlighting alleged violations of the election code of conduct in the NA-127 constituency. The correspondence comes just days before the elections, with Haider pointing out unauthorized development work purportedly aimed at influencing the electoral outcome.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner presents evidence, including videos, of streets being reconstructed in NA-127. The development work, initiated by the administration only eight days prior to the polling day, is seen as a breach of the electoral code of conduct designed to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
Senator Haider’s letter elaborates on the lack of local elections in Punjab province for several years and the formation of unelected councils dominated by workers from the Muslim League (N). These councils have allegedly been allocating jobs and contracts to political workers in contravention of the law. Furthermore, it is claimed that these councils have initiated schemes in areas where PML-N candidates are perceived to be at risk of losing, thereby violating the law and election code of conduct.
The PPP’s concerns specifically reference the constituency where Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is contesting for a National Assembly seat, indicating a broader issue of misuse of public funds to favor certain candidates across Punjab. The party’s letter to the Election Commission seeks not only to halt these illegal activities but also to initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for the violations.
This move by the PPP underscores the contentious nature of pre-election activities in NA-127 and highlights the party’s call for fair electoral practices and adherence to the code of conduct established by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
