Christchurch, The Pakistan women’s cricket team is scheduled to depart for Dunedin from Christchurch tomorrow to participate in an upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand. The series, comprising three T20I matches from December 3 to 9 and three One Day Internationals (ODIs) from December 12 to 18, will take place in Dunedin, Queenstown, and Christchurch. The ODIs are a part of the ICC Women’s Championship.
According to Pakistan Cricket Board, since arriving in Christchurch on November 25, the 17-member squad led by Nida Dar has engaged in intense preparation, including two practice sessions and matches against New Zealand XI. In a recent 50-over practice match at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln University, Pakistan women’s team achieved a commendable 57-run victory over New Zealand XI, thanks to a four-wicket haul from captain Nida and a pivotal 38-run contribution from wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi.
However, in the T20 practice match held today at the same venue, New Zealand XI secured a 28-run win over Pakistan. New Zealand XI scored 168 for seven, with significant contributions from Georgia Plimmer, while Pakistan’s Nida and Nashra Sundhu each took two wickets. Despite a valiant effort led by opening batter Muneeba Ali, who scored 32, Pakistan managed 140 for eight. New Zealand XI’s Kayley Knight and Nensi Patel were notable for taking three wickets each.
Following the T20 match, both teams engaged in a super over to simulate various match situations, resulting in a tie in both instances.
Interim head coach Mauhtashim Rashid expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparation and the opportunity for younger players to gain experience ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next year. The coach emphasized adapting to the different conditions and utilizing these matches to prepare effectively.
The Pakistan squad includes experienced and upcoming players, demonstrating a blend of skill and potential. The series is expected to be a challenging yet exciting opportunity for the team to showcase their talent and resilience against a formidable New Zealand side.
