Pakistan Remembers Baseball Pioneer Syed Khawar Shah on Sixth Anniversary

Jhang, Pakistan marks the sixth anniversary of the passing of Syed Khawar Shah, fondly remembered as the pioneer of baseball in the country. The day was observed with deep reverence and respect, not only in Pakistan but also around the world, particularly in his native city of Jhang.

According to Pakistan Federation Baseball, special prayers and commemorative events were held to honor the legacy of Syed Khawar Shah, who is credited with introducing and nurturing baseball in Pakistan. His contributions to various sports have left an indelible mark on the country’s sporting landscape.

The Federation’s Women’s Wing Secretary Aisha Irum, Sindh Baseball Association President Mohammad Mohsin Khan, and Secretary Pervaiz Ahmed Sheikh, along with baseball officials and fans globally, engaged in a conversation with Syed Fakhar Ali Shah, the son of the late Syed Khawar Shah and current President of the Pakistan Federation Baseball. They praised Syed Fakhar Ali Shah for continuing his father’s vision and mission and expressed their commitment to support the sport’s growth in Pakistan.

Syed Fakhar Ali Shah highlighted that anniversary commemorations and Quran recitation sessions were organized across Pakistan’s provinces and academies, receiving condolence messages from baseball-playing countries worldwide. Born on December 7, 1949, in Jhang, Punjab province, Syed Khawar Shah, originally named Parvez Shah Khawar, started his career in sports administration in 1978. He rose to significant positions, including Director General of Sports Board Punjab and later Managing Director, before retiring in December 2009.

A pivotal moment in his career came when the International Olympic Committee included baseball in the 1992 Olympics. Seizing this opportunity, Syed Khawar Shah introduced baseball in Pakistan, officially starting in Gujranwala that year. His tireless efforts led to the Pakistan Baseball Federation becoming a member of the International Baseball Federation and the Baseball Federation of Asia.

Syed Khawar Shah’s legacy in Pakistan’s sports history is profound. His dedication to developing baseball and other sports has set significant milestones, with the credit for the current growth and popularity of baseball in Pakistan largely attributed to him and now continued by his son, Syed Fakhar Ali Shah. Their contributions to sports in Pakistan are remembered and cherished.
