Karachi Hosts Seminar to Mark World Oceans Day 2024

Karachi, In celebration of World Oceans Day 2024, the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) and Bahria University Karachi organized an expansive seminar titled “Awaken New Depths.” This event aimed to underscore the critical importance of oceans and promote sustainable interaction with marine environments.

According to National Institute of Maritime Affairs, the seminar began with an address by Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Saeed HI(M), President of NIMA, who stressed the need for a deeper connection with nature to protect vital ecosystems. He emphasized that beyond mere statistics, community mobilization is essential for the preservation of marine resources and the enhancement of the country’s economy.

The seminar assembled a diverse group of participants, including government officials, members of the maritime community, academics, industry representatives, and students from various maritime sectors. International and local experts such as Dr. Paul Liu from North Carolina State University, USA, discussed global challenges and opportunities in ocean conservation.

The event featured engaging activities for students, including a “pledge wall” where hundreds demonstrated their commitment to ocean preservation. An online essay competition was also highlighted, with winners receiving their prizes from Professor Dr. Dost Muhammad Baloch, Vice Chancellor of Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences, who served as the Guest of Honor.

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui, who attended as the Chief Guest, spoke on the social dimensions of sea pollution and the individual’s responsibility towards environmental preservation. He acknowledged the challenges in governance and enforcement of policies in Pakistan and expressed readiness to support recommendations that could lead to significant environmental improvements.

The seminar concluded with Vice Admiral (Retd) Saeed and Mayor Siddiqui distributing souvenirs to guest speakers and participants, celebrating a successful day of learning and advocacy for ocean conservation.
