Karachi, In response to the rising number of young people with undiagnosed hypertension, health experts have proposed the establishment of awareness desks in shopping centers nationwide. This initiative was discussed at a symposium titled “High Blood Pressure: A Silent Killer” hosted at the Dow International Medical College’s Ojha Campus, aiming to enhance public knowledge and prevention strategies for blood pressure issues.
According to Dow University of Health Sciences, the event featured prominent figures including Dr. Muhammad Tariq Farman, Director of the Institute of Cardiology, and Professor Dr. Nawaz Lashari, President of the Pakistan Hypertension League, who emphasized that hypertension is no longer a condition only affecting the elderly. The symposium highlighted various lifestyle factors, such as excessive use of mobile devices and tobacco products, that are contributing to the rising incidence of hypertension among young adults aged 21 to 25.
During the symposium, experts shared significant statistics and research findings related to hypertension management in Pakistan. Dr. Zafar Iqbal Hyedry presented global and national data, revealing that while 43% of Pakistan’s population suffers from hypertension, only 11% have their condition under control. This contrasted with a mere 3% control rate in the past, showing some progress due to increased awareness.
The experts collectively stressed the importance of preventive measures, including reducing salt intake, quitting smoking, controlling obesity, and enhancing physical activity. They also discussed the crucial role of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, in educating and managing patients to improve adherence to treatment protocols.
The symposium concluded with a call to action for establishing awareness desks in high-traffic areas like shopping malls to actively engage the public in hypertension education and screening, aiming to reduce the high rate of undiagnosed cases and prevent future health complications.
