LBS’ Chaudry A. Dhariwal deliberates on Taxation System at Discover Pakistan Channel

Lahore, March 22, 2022 (PPI-OT):Recently, Mr. Chaudry Ahtesham Dhariwal (Assistant Professor, Lahore Business School) was invited as an Educationist and Tax and Corporate Consultant in The Morning Show, broadcasted on Discover Pakistan Channel. The interview revolved around the subject of taxation system of Pakistan and sustainable growth of tourism industry.

Mr. Dhariwal explained that 90% of people in Pakistan are earning white money, therefore the tax returns are of extreme importance for Pakistan’s economic stability. He elucidated that FBR has created IRIS software which is a system through which each individual can create a personal account and return the file himself.

He suggested that source of income and wealth statement should be incorporated while filing tax returns. For salaried employees the tax is deducted by their respective organization, hence they only have to declare their assets. These tax deductions would facilitate the citizens of the country in future when a pension system may be created for people who have been consistently paying taxes throughout their work life.

Mr. Dhariwal further recommended that another way to improve tax returns is to remove the negative stereotypes attached to the role of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). When asked about the reasons why people distrust the FBR, he said that it was due to lack of information regarding taxation and lack of education. Mr. Dhariwal believes that people, should be made aware of the fact that they are benefited with less tax deductions on electricity bills, restaurant bills etc., if they are tax filers.

During the interview he was also asked about his hobbies in which he disclosed that he enjoyed travelling especially in the country. He emphasized that tourism industry in Pakistan can be promoted through focusing on three things: infrastructure, hospitality and security. If these three things are worked upon and advertised in an appropriate manner, he believes that it would greatly impact the Foreign Reserves as well. Moreover, Mr. Dhariwal believes that the education sector should revive the tradition of school trips that explore the tourism spots within the city and country.

As an educationalist, he concluded his talk with a point that the local universities should campaign on an international level in order to attract students from foreign countries to come and study in Pakistan.

UOL strengthens evaluation criteria for Research Productivity Award-2021

Lahore, March 22, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Research Productivity Award (RPA) emerged as one of the key initiatives of the University of Lahore (UOL) to foster innovative and far-reaching development in the field of research. The award scheme is at promoting quality research, increasing the number of research publications in ISI, Web of Science indexed impact factor journals, attracting young faculty members towards research-oriented careers, and improving the visibility of UOL research in the international community.

Recently, the University revised its evaluation criteria for RPA to meet international standards. The tightening of the criterion was in conformity with Dr. Muhammad Iqbal’s (Director, ORIC) commitment announced last year during the Research Award Ceremony. The new changes guarantee that only high-quality researchers whose work adheres to the norms of professionalism, transparency, accountability, and auditability will get to the RPA.

The changes made in the criteria were consolidated into five points which exhibited that research contributions of one year will be considered in research areas such as publications, patents, books authored/edited, PhDs supervised and external research grants received. Citation count and publication of the recent three years will also be considered.

The equal divisibility among the number of contributing researchers will be applied in case of published/edited book, impact factor and citation of publications and patents. As per the criteria, the books published by the reputed publishers and other publications in impact factor journals will be considered for the award. However, any researcher blacklisted by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) based on plagiarism will not be considered.

A total of 40 awards that include six main and 34 departmental awards in the form of cash, merit certificates and medals will be given to the selected researchers as per the new criteria. For the eligibility assessment, the faculty members will have to provide their personal information, details of research publications, published/edited books, research grants, patents, research supervision, reception of any national, international or UOL awards and arrangement/attendance in conference or symposia.

UOL signs clean environment Electric Vehicle contract with European Climate Foundation

Lahore, March 22, 2022 (PPI-OT):The University of Lahore (UOL) has recently entered a new contract with a leading European environmental organization in which the two will cooperate in the development of clean environment electric vehicles. Mr. Nasir Mehmood (Pro-Rector, Academics) and Dr. Aazir Khan (Director, Integrated Engineering Centre of Excellence (IECE), signed the national Electric Vehicle (EV) policy contract with the European Climate Foundation (TARA) at the Defence Road Campus last month.

According to the agreement, TARA will provide the USD 20K contract award to the Engineering Center, becoming its second major milestone this calendar year, following the recent endorsement of its national EV policy by the Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) of Pakistan. With this financial boost, IECE would be able to accelerate implementation of the National EV Policy passed in December, 2020.

Furthermore, the Center would steer a national alliance of clean transportation manufacturers, researchers, and financial institutions in addition to playing a major role in regulation and standardization of EV policy. The Centre will also conduct a study in Pakistan to evaluate and argue for methods of overcoming impediments to the implementation of Pakistan’s 2020 EV policy developed by MoCC.

The research study will include the promotion of electro-fitting (E-Fitting) automobiles, a project started by IECE. The ultimate goal would be to create an electric vehicle ecosystem in Pakistan that would monitor and aid in the implementation of EV policy to ensure sustainable and environment friendly transportation. Previously, the IECE has been struggling to promote indigenous technologies that could help increase the economic performance of the local organizations whilst promoting the idea of retrofitting that emulated the intervention of conversion to CNG kits 10-15 years ago.
