Demand to expedite second phase of Green Line

Karachi, May 09, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor on Monday demanded of the government to accelerate pace of work on the second phase of Green Line from Mazar-e-Quaid to Meriwether Tower so as to facilitate Karachi commuters.

He said in a statement that public transport system in Karachi has been neglected for decades and the city commuters face a lot of difficulties in traveling. He said the city needs thousands of wide-bodied buses and a vibrant Karachi Circular Railway KCR, but so far, the commuters of the mega city are content to travel in overcrowded smoke-emitting minibuses and motorcycle rickshaws. He said by any standard Karachi is the most backward megacity in the world in terms of public transport facilities.

In 2016 former Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif laid the foundation stone of the green line metro bus system. Now its is called Green Line BRT System. However, this important commuting system faced inordinate delays and still its second phase from Numaish to Tower is pending.

The snail paces progress on the second phase of Green Line BRT is frustrating the Karachiites and it seems that it would take longer times to get this important scheme completed if the federal and provincial governments failed to give it topmost priority.

Shakoor said the Orange Line BRT of Sindh government has also been facing prolonged delays; however, new provincial transport minister Sharjeel Memon has announced to complete it soon. He hoped that the government of Sindh would fulfill this promise to win the hearts and minds of Karachiites. He said similarly, Red Lines BRT also needs greater focus of the government so that the megacity’s public transport problems could be mitigated to some extent.

He demanded of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to give special attention to the Green Line that is the flagship project of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Shakoor said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is well-known for his ability to successfully launch and finish development projects and it is high time that he use his leadership potential to solve the public transport problem of Karachi by expediting the Green Line BRT.

He said similarly Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah is also committed to make Karachi a modern megacity in true letter and spirit. He hoped that the federal and provincial governments would join hands to ensure early completion of the second phase of the Green Line BRT on priority.

West Indies announce Men’s squad for ODI tours to the Netherlands and Pakistan

Antigua, May 09, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today announced the West Indies Senior Men’s squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) tours of the Netherlands and Pakistan. The West Indies will visit the Netherlands for three ODIs on May 31, June 2 and 4, followed by another three ODIs on June 8, 10 and 12 in Pakistan.

The tour of Netherlands will be the first-ever ODI Series between the two teams and will be played at the VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen. The matches in Pakistan will be played at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi. Both series form part of the part of the ICC ODI Super League, where teams will have the opportunity to earn points to secure one of the top seven places, excluding hosts India, to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Three newcomers have been named in the ODI squad – fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis as well as specialist batter Keacy Carty. Both Seales and Lewis have played at the Test level. Carty is the first player from St. Maarten to be selected for the West Indies Senior Men’s team.

Lead Selector, the Most Hon. Dr. Desmond Haynes said: “We were impressed with Carty and the way he goes about his innings, we saw several glimpses of his ability the way he played against England earlier this year for the CWI President’s XI. We hope that giving him this opportunity he will recognize the importance of representing West Indies. We think he is a young batsman with great promise, and this is the kind of tour he can show he fits in.”

Haynes added: “We also have a very good group of young fast bowlers who have demonstrated their ability and we want to use these two tours to give them opportunities in the 50-over format. We have a week in The Netherlands and another week in Pakistan and this should provide them with quality opposition to bowl against as we build towards the Cricket World Cup in 2023. Phillip has been around for some time, and we know what he can offer, Seales has been very good in Test cricket and Lewis is making a return to the West Indies set-up following some good performances.”

All format all-rounder Jason Holder is being rested to manage his workload whilst Shimron Hetmyer is also unavailable for selection to be at home for the birth of his first child. Evin Lewis was not considered for selection after failing to meet CWI’s fitness criteria.
