AKU students launch environment-focused societies in Tanzania and Pakistan

Karachi, August 16, 2023 (PPI-OT): With every passing day, the consequences of climate change and biodiversity loss become ever more apparent. Increasing incidences of extreme weather, natural disasters and disease outbreaks are now becoming the new normal. The most concerning part is that these incidences are not isolated but instead are part of a chain reaction with devastating effects throughout the globe.

Addressing and living with climate change is a reality and concern for today’s youth, particularly the students. Globally, youth-led movements have been instrumental in raising awareness and mobilising millions of people to demand urgent action from governments and institutions. The power of students to influence and their contributions as agents of change, innovation, and entrepreneurship are vital for accelerating climate action at all levels. Students offer fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a readiness to confront complex challenges. As future leaders, their active participation fosters creative solutions and new approaches to addressing environmental issues, ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come.

To walk the talk, AKU students in Tanzania and Pakistan took it upon themselves to launch student societies focused on addressing environment and climate issues. AKU leadership and Offices of Student Experience in all geographies are supporting them.

Tanzania:

The ‘AKU Environment Club’ was formed and run by passionate students from AKU-IED, launched on 30th May 2023. It provides a platform for like-minded individuals to work together towards environmental conservation and sustainability.

In the words of the society’s Chairperson (Khadija Suleiman), “With excitement and resolve, we align ourselves with AKU’s path toward a healthier, more sustainable future. We are convinced of the vital role our club can play in elevating awareness about environmental issues, imparting education to the community, and igniting a spark in others to participate actively.”
