Karachi, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, leader of the Aafia Movement and a renowned neurophysician, has expressed grave concerns over the safety and well-being of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, currently incarcerated in a US jail.
According to Aafia Movement, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, who recently returned from the United States, voiced these concerns at Karachi airport. She emphasized that her visits to the US are part of the ongoing efforts of the Aafia Movement, which seeks to secure the release of “innocent Aafia” from US imprisonment. Dr. Fowzia reported observing more injuries on Aafia Siddiqui’s body than before and stated that Aafia’s life is in serious danger.
During her interaction with the media, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui highlighted issues with the embassy’s delay in the scheduled visit, the wastage of time, and the non-provision of facilities for an agreed social visit as per prison laws. She questioned why the state and nation of Pakistan were being disrespected in this manner.
She further revealed that, despite an agreement for an eight-hour meeting, they were only allowed three hours. Aafia Siddiqui’s lawyer informed her of the cruel treatment Aafia is allegedly facing in prison and urged the Pakistani government to take immediate action for her release.
Dr. Fowzia described the challenges faced during her visits, including an incident where the prison authorities claimed to have lost the key to Aafia’s cell, delaying their meeting. When they eventually met, they were separated by a glass wall, which Dr. Fowzia interpreted as a sign of weak diplomacy by Pakistan.
Reflecting on her first meeting with Aafia six months ago, Dr. Fowzia recalled Aafia’s question about whether Pakistan was occupied. The recent visit’s issues seemed to her an answer to that question.
She emphasized the need for active support from both Islamabad and ‘Rawalpindi’ for Aafia’s release and expressed gratitude to the Aafia Movement supporters who welcomed her at the airport on a cold night. A large number of supporters had gathered at the Karachi airport for Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui’s arrival.
